For me, it's a 2.7/5, which is to say, slightly above average.
Good:
Kyle Cooper's awesome opening credit montage.
I loved how Godzilla was portrayed in this film, and his fights against Zilla, Kamakuras, and Kumonga didn't really bother me that much (I actually loved the Zilla fight).
The Rodan scene in New York! Holy $%#&! That was awesome! I would have been happy if the whole movie was just a continuation of THAT SCENE.
Anguirus, and his destruction of the chinese war vessel and the pearl tower.
The Manda Prop.
EDF vs. Ebira was crazy, cool, and brutal. I was upset that Ebirah never managed to actually kill one of the soldiers though...
Gigan looked awesome.
Monster X: Badass.
Kaiser Ghidorah (Performance): Badasser.
Gotengo: Yay.
The motorcycle fight wasn't as absolutely horrible as I thought it would be.
The Bad:
Minya. 'Nuff said.
Gigan's portrayal as an idiot, and his stupidly short first battle with Godzilla. It's a shame that they wasted that awesome design in such a way...
Kaiser Ghidorah (Design): UGH. Seriously. How hard would it have been to enlarge the heads just a teensy little bit? It looked like G was fighting a three pronged carrot. The shot of him rearing up on his hind legs was awful. I could have lived without the uselessness of the wings and the four legs, too. Cool color scheme, though.
Minya, again.
The editing was horrible. All of those quick cuts in the middle of conversation...Made especially apparent whenever they forced a Minya scene upon us.
The camerawork for the human scenes. I can't help it. I'm not a fan of Kitamura's ever-moving camera.
The entire human storyline needed a HUGE overhaul. Keep Douglas Gordon and the Xilians. The mutant stuff just made me lose interest. What was up with that Nazi Mutant-Commander dude? He died fifteen minutes after I'd forgotten about him.
Human fight scenes should NOT take precedence over kaiju fight scenes. Godzilla is fighting; I don't care about the stupid Matrix ripoff going on in the mothership. If Ozaki had just sent the lasers back in the Xilian's faces and killed them all (Kazuki Kitamura included) right there, I would have been happy. I wanted to see more of how Gigan and Monster X fought against Godzilla; instead, I get guys in black leather jumping at one another for fifteen minutes.
Hedorah being offed in three seconds. No.
The music: My biggest complaint with the film. This is the second worst score in G history, falling only before the terrible might of Godzilla vs. Megalon. Keep the Gotengo theme, and the Godzilla theme. Nix the rest. Some people have been saying that the "ending" music actually fit well with the scenes it was included in, and I'm inclined to agree, they fit together exactly like Ebola and anal bleeding. Music is one of the most important things for me in ANY film I watch, and GFW failed at providing even a passable listening experience.
All in all, I'm going to say that I enjoyed GFW about as much as I enjoyed GxM. It wasn't the worst of the millenium series, but it wasn't the best, either. It DAMN sure isn't 50th material, though it is quite enjoyable...
