Indeed. I figured the film wouldn't end up on my top ten list. I have a love for the film from a historical point of view. There is so much of a story behind this film. The way it was brought over here and butchered then sold to WB. The whole "Volcano Monsters" affair with a Godzilla and an Angilas suite being shipped to AB-PT pictures right before they went belly up. The suites may still be here in the States somewhere. The story behind the film is more interesting then the film itself.

Besides I love bad movies and Gigantis may very well be the king.

Ok so today I got my copy of Mr. Lobo's Cinema Insomnia Ep. 3 which contians "Gigantis: The Fire Monster" and I thought I let everyone know what I thought (to aid those who were considering getting a copy).

I will say this from the jump start, if you're one of those fanatics about picture quality then stay away because the film looks like a well-worn VHS tape (maybe a lil worse then that) and it's full screen. AGAIN, IF YOU ARE ONE OF THOSE WANT EVERYTHING CRYSTAL CLEAR PEOPLE AVOID THIS! ( or if you have the R2 then I guess you wouldn't need this either). This is for people who don't have the R2 (or a region free player) and/or just like "Gigantis: The Fire Monster".

The last time I seen this movie was when I was in Kindergarten so this movie is "almost" new to me and I have to say I highly enjoyed it. Not the greatest movie but it was decent movie (I'll take this movie over at least 6 over G-Movies), monster action was good, plot was standard, etc. Not going into an indepth review just wanted to say I liked it a lot :D But the movie isn't played straight through, you get to see commericals from back in that time period (SOS, Tang, various Godzilla-related toys) and trailers from other monster movies (Godzilla vs The Thing and The Giant Behemoth to name a few). The only 2 things that bothered me was that some of the commericals came at the wrong time...like someone could be talking and then BAM! A Commerical break! And during the final fight between Godzilla (or should I say Gigantis) and Anguirus out of no where you see Mr. Lobo and a "plant" playing G:DAMM as Godzilla and Anguirus?!?!? That really bothered me Image and it happens 2 times doing that segment of the movie. Other then that I can't really complain, it was great to see a movie I haven't seen in AGES again :D And now here are some random photos:

Damn, I'm glad I have a good quality dvdr of this version! I still don't know why the Video Treasures vhs was so hard to find in this country, I bought three copies of it at K-Mart! In fact, one of them I have is still brand new in its original shrinkwrap! :D
The copy I have on dvdr came off of a tv station's master tape so it looks far better than those crappy ep speed vhs and dvdrs of the Video Treasures version. While it doesn't look as nice as the region 2, the quality is still fantastic

I've never seen GIGANTIS, but I am rather fond of GRA. There's no other Godzilla movie like it, in that the focus is on people and their relationships in the face of these unstoppable forces. I can totally see how that makes it a rather boring film, but it is unique compared to Godzilla films and monster movies in general. The emphasis is not about "how do we defeat this monster with our army and technology?" or "how will Monster A defend us from Monster B?", but rather "how do we live in the shadow of these forces of nature?" The closest thing I've seen to it since then is GAMERA 3, certainly not in terms of style or content, but in that look inside at people on the sidelines of these disasters and how it affects them. That's why I'm not really interested in a GIGANTIS DVD... from what I've heard, it's just another monster movie, and not a very good one.

OTOH, I could be reading too much into it.

Up until today, I've never seen the Japanese version of Godzilla Raids Again." I picked up a DVD of it with subtitles at a Hollywood Collector's Show today and I like it much better than the butchered up U.S. Gigantis, The Fire Monster.

Not a great film as the original, but entertaining.
