I think my main disapointment factor came down to this:

1.) Godzilla's "last" Movie. = Godzilla was more or less a plot device to end the Xiliens invasion. But he was much like Darth Maul; Very hyped, but under-used.

2.) Godzilla's 50th Anniversary. = I can understand the general resentment that this movie was paying homage to almost everything else BUT Godzilla. Matrix, ROTJ, Atragon, DAM (which featured several monsters) were all among the many tips to the hat. One big orgy of everything but the girl.

3.) 10 monsters were (re)created. = ...and also under-used. WHY build a Hedorah costume, if he's to bite it within 10 seconds? Why spend so much on kaiju costums if your only going to highlight each for about 5 minutes?

Now I liked this movie as well, but it was definately overly ambitious, and the basic concept sounds cool on paper, but Godzilla got the shaft. It would have been more appropriate to have made GMK his 50th. At least everyone's concern is mainly Godzilla in that flick!

A word to the wise... if the Japanese theatres are empty for GFW, then don't expect our friends at Sony(with the exception of Mike) to jump on the bandwagon for a US theatre release.

Question, does Toho read their scripts before the movies are made? I write my personal stuff here and there, but I imagine the whole thing out in my head to know how the story will play out. Surly if Toho had read the script then they would have had a main idea how the movie would be (story-wise anyway). I felt somewhat nervous that the writers from the millenium series wrote a draft to this. People felt better when they heard Kitamura did rewrites, but from the reviews they seem to be still... bad.
Still, Toho had the basic script and gave it a go. So Toho... don't act too surprised by the fan reaction.

Visual-wise, if it was the intention to make this movie a parody, then I can see why some people, even Toho, are angry and dissapointed. Toho has tried, even though they failed at times, to make Godzilla serious and fun. Toho never tried to make fun of the weak aspects of Godzilla movies, the weak aspects were just there as a result of the talent and budget. The last film of a series should be one where the star goes out with honor. Godzilla vs. Destroyer did bring a tear to my eye and made me salute Godzilla as he made his last roar as he melted. Speaking of which, what is the reaction at the end of the film. Did you guys cry, salute, or what? :)

Do you think they put those cut scenes back into the film for the Japanese release? I think there was an hour of footage cut.

Godbless and be cool!

I saw the third showing at the Humax theatre in Narita town on the 4th, and I have to say there was absolutely NO audience reaction at all. The theatre was 3/4 full. Not even applause at the end!! To sum it up, there was WAY too much time devoted to the human action scenes, and too little time given to godzilla and the other monsters. I thought as a whole the monsters were well done, but not given enough to do. I do agree that Minya being in the film had no rhyme or reason. I did go into the theatre with little expectations, but I did enjoy it as pure escapism, with no relation to any G films from the past, but definite tributes to some scenes. I would give it a seven out of 10!!
