I would not recommend this book in any way.Picked it up out of :goji-obligation: and that it was cheap. If you are a lifelong Gfan there is nothing new here. It's not a Japans fave Mon-star or Godzewski encyclopedia book by a long shot. Its mainly alot of at times incoherent memories/reviews/social commentary. He even exagerrates/lies to add depth. In one chapter he actually infers AlQaeda watched Godzilla movies for their destruction(Not true I do have info on what the connection was if anyone's interested) The whole thing reminds me of Will Ferrel imitating the guy on "Inside the Actors studio".
Perhaps what I disliked the most was he 1)seems to on one hand read WAY too much subtext into everything goji (hey Bill these are kids flicks made for a quick buck, not Schindler's list) and 2) Perhaps further reinforce his "academic" status by going overhboard with condescending criticism. I think we all know Godzilla isn't high art, yet if everyfilm needs to be academically torn apart-why'd you write the dang book?
So keeping in mind there are no good pictures, no new info, and alot of embarassing analysis and ire, it will gather dust on my bookshelf.
I live near the guy and while he has done an honerable thing by promoting his godzilla conference here in Lawrence, it is seriously a lousy book.
