I just saw it for the third time. After better-than-expected-first time and worst-Godzilla-movie-ever second time, this time it was O.K. again.
The fact that I'am not a native English speaker made me enjoy the original English lines of some actors, like at the first showing at the Japan premiere, which sound easily better to my ears than the crappy Anime-overdubbing in Japanese for the normal showings. They show the premiere version at 6.40 every day at the Toho cinema at Ginza (same like premiere).
I paid much attention to the Monsters. The Kaiju scenes are just great, even though they are way too short. The girls were great again - great legs
While the human scenes were O.K. when they talked, I had enough time while they were fighting (man to man - the other action scenes were better) to think about my shopping list for the next few weeks.
There were some kids in the not-so-crowded theater. One slept through almost the whole movie. I can understand why.
The begining is stunning. Godzilla fighting the Showa Goten combined with the powerful "Kaiju intruduction theme" used in the TV special easily made me get goosebumps (this one might be a major grammatical error). Then as soon as the M-force is introduced it's getting boring.
However like I said before, the monster scenes were just great (some bad FX aside) and now I am actually looking forward to see these scenes again while skipping the human crap chapters.
Godzilla is just "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" powerful. He just kicks ass! Somehow before I didn't like Godzilla in Final Wars, because he has so few screentime, but when I paid attention the these scenes in particular, while switching my brain to "standby-mode" during the human crap, it was O.K.
When Godzilla is freed from his icey prison by some missiles shot off by the new Goten while Gigan is around, about to finish the Battleship off,
Godzilla full of rage shoots his heat ray at the cyborg (like in Terror of MechaGodzilla when he's back from under ground). After the short battle he goes on to the Goten - totally pissed and crushed everything on his way to Tokyo.
-Kumonga looks too great and it is just sad that you see it only some 2 minutes on screen in the whole movie.
-CG Manda looks as fake as those silly CG creatures in the Mortal Kombat movies - NG
-hearing Anguirus cry again almost made myself cry - nostalgia overload!
-Mynia is just silly and the scenes with him disturb the otherwise good flow of the movie while the monsters are raging in the world.
-Gigan is just cool. Too few screentime though. The flying model looks like crap - even worse than in the 70ties
-Mothra looks very "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" except in one close up shot. The marionette is not handled well. CG looks worse than in GMK and SOS.
-Rodan is impressive at night and lacks screentime at daytime in the foight against Godzilla
-King Caesar looks just silly. I like the monster but in GFW he looks too cheap
-Kamakiras is O.K. but his screentime should have been devoted to Kumonga or any other monter more interesting
-Ebirah is good. Looks better in the movie than on pics.
-Hedorah - why is he in the movie? Just odd...
-GINO is nice and fun to see. The fight with SUM41 is a standout thought way too short
-Monster X looks too much like man-in-suit. Not only the "2nd skin" suit, but also the movements
-Kaiser Ghidorah looks evil and impressive. Better than Monster X. A worthy opponent for the 50th. But it is finished too easily when G has recovered.
There is actually a rock version of Emerson's video game track during the M-Force X Ebirah fight which is very cool like the whole scene. But like I said before, the cheap version is used during the start of the Goten and during the "Death Star" sequence. But it fit's well. Some of the other music sucks fatally - i.e. the cheap techno music.
The way they show Godzilla as an unstoppable furious beast is great.
If the monster scenes weren't so short and the human fight weren't so boring I could accept GFW as the 50th. But in this state I cannot.
