Batman 66 coming to DVD Finally!

Postby klen7 » Thu Jan 16, 2014 9:54 am

So apparently Conan O'Brien accidentally let it slip that WB is finally putting out the classic Batman series on home video (i guess both Fox and WB decided they wanted to make money) and the WB confirmed the news,

I'm looking forward to it!

I really have never seen enough of this show, so maybe I shouldn't even make this comment, but when did this show go from "God that's STUPID" to "It's so much awesome and fun and great!" ?

I've always liked the show. I grew up on its reruns around the time the Tim Burton film came out. At 7 years old I was the prefect age. I still watch it when I can on MeTV. And yes, it's very silly and over the top but it's still fun. And as an adult I get the tongue in cheek, self aware satire that went over my head as a kid. I also see now just how much they actually mirrored the look of traditional comic books in live action tv. From the set design and costumes to the vibrant colors and even the camera angles the show literally looks like a 1940's comic page come to life. And even the narration and the dialogue, as hilarious as it sounds spoken aloud, is ripped straight from the pages of the source material.

I'm excited to be able to finally own a high quality set of the show partly because of nostalgia, partly because I still like the show as an adult and have a new appreciation for things I missed as a kid, and partly because I have a baby boy on the way and can't wait to sit and watch classic shows like this with him in a few years.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Adam West do audio commentaries for every single episode of the series?.

When they startred releasing character figures based on the actors from the '66 TV series recently, I had a hunch (and said my prayers, LOL) that it would only be a matter of time before the show itself eventually made it's way (at long last!) onto home video. I just pray that the folks responsible for putting this together are doing it as a quality, hi-def, remastered Blu-ray release, and NOT just transferring it straight to DVD with whatever materials/prints are readily available. This show deserves a frame-by-frame restoration in full 1080p and a TON of extras. It certainly would be worthwhile since it was originally shot on 35mm. Thank goodness Adam West, Burt Ward, Yvonne Craig and Julie Newmar are still around. I hope they're being asked to contribute interviews, episode-specific commentaries and the like. It sure would have been nice to have had interviews with Burgess Meredith, Frank Gorshin and others. A curse on both FOX and WB for not getting their heads out of their butts and settling all the legal matters years ago! What a shame that this legal junk dragged on and on until, now that everything's settled, many of the cast & crew have passed on. Perhaps they can dig up archive interviews, behind the scenes footage and the like to showcase the creative contributions of those folks no longer with us? They'd also better have a nice, long, in-depth featurette about the creation of the Batmobile - with TONS of behind the scenes construction photos a video tour of the car under, in, and around, plus interviews with George Barris and maybe folks who own or have owned one of the originals over the years! Here's hoping!

Please, please, pretty please do this show justice WB! Give us a truely AWESOME beyond awesome Blu-ray BATMAN release!!! Can't wait to hear more details. It would be cool if the company that restored all of the James Bond films gave the same treatment to Batman. I guess I need to start holding back a piece of each paycheck starting yesterday! LOL. Sure hope the wait isn't too long, but I'd be willing to wait a while longer if it meant giving WB time to produce the best quality set or extra time to assemble the best/most extras and bonus content. The news of Adam West pre-recording commentary for EVERY episode is pretty awesome news. The man was apparently prepared for the worst, in the event that the legal retape might never got untagled before he died. Very foreward thinking of him! Now let's just hope they use the commentaries, or create new ones with Burt and other surviving cast & crew!

I pray that the suits at WB don't get cheap and skimp on this release. It has been the most-requested "lost" series begging for a DVD release since just about forever, with Six Million Dollar Man coming in second. I've had SMDM since it finally came out a few years back and now I'll be able to have most of my entire childhood heroes collection on disc for my viewing pleasure! That's just so flippin' cool. Especially important to keep the memories alive, with the sad news of two of the 70's generation TV personalities passing on the same day. RIP: Russell "The Professor" Johnson and Dave "Reuben Kincaid" Madden.

It's also worth mentioning that 1943's serial series and it's sequel Batman and Robin is being released by Mill Creek in a 2 disc set:

Here's the Link:

It's safe to say since each of the series will have 15 parts per disc and each are 26 minutes long, the quality should look good.

Sad news as Lorenzo Simple Jr. (one of the series' writers) has died at the age of 91.

Very sad news. FLASH GORDON (1980) is total genius. KING KONG (1976) is likewise grand entertainment. Say what you will but Dino's KONG is my Kong. Lange is impossibly dreamy, Grodin is sharp and hilarious, Barry's score is among his best. Definitive Kong...
God is in the details.
