Last night I watched Safety Not Guaranteed (2012), Colin Trevorrow's first film.
It's wasn't bad, but I knew right up front it wasn't for me. It was well made for what it was, but it's not exactly the type of film I actively seek out. It was basically one of those 'trying too hard to be a quirky independent dramedy' type things I usually can't stand. It's something I only sought out because I knew the director was doing a Jurassic Park movie. It sort of reminded me of watching Gareth Edwards' Monsters (2010), only I was much more impressed by that as a directorial debut and surely would have seen and liked it even if Edwards hadn't signed on to a Godzilla movie.
Again, I didn't think it was bad, it had some nice character moments and a faint sense of wonder I expect to see on a more grand scale in Jurassic World. I just hope Trevorrow can take on a big action/adventure movie like this.
