Despite being an easily enjoyable movie, KING KONG ESCAPES, I think is where the the team of Honda and Tsuburaya started to slip a little bit. While Honda keeps the story moving along comfortably, this isn't his best work. And you can tell that by this time, the strain of juggling his job at Toho with Tsuburaya Productions, and failing health was getting the better of Eiji-san. Still, we have an excellent Ifukube score, great performances by all (with the exception of Linda Miller, sadly) and a nice, light-weight comic book-type story that stays true to what Kong is. He's at once menacing, but still sympathetic, but with a little bit of goofiness thrown in for the kids. And MechaniKong ROCKS!!! One of the best creations ever! Gorosaurus is memorable too.

Oh, and the new DVD is excellent. Just watched it in its entirety for the first time since I got it!

I dont remember the commercial.

But yeah, KKE is far from perfect, but its still so much fun that I can't see how so many people could hate it! And personally I love the Kong suit. At least he looked somewhat like a gorilla, unlike the KKvG suit where he looked like chewed up bubble gum wrapped in dog hair.

I absolutely hated this movie (KKE) the first time I saw it in a theater, sometime in the late 70s. The reason I hated it was for the simple reason that the theater had deviously advertised Destroy All Monsters, which I loved (and still love), but showed King Kong Escapes instead, which at the time, I had never heard of, let alone seen. I had never felt more cheated in my life. However, I recall thinking through my seething juvenile anger that Gorosaurus (a character I knew) and Mechani-Kong were pretty cool, but Kong himself was absolutely atrocious.

30 years later, having long made my peace with KKE, I enjoy it for what it is: a typically fine piece of Toho entertainment! Great Ifukube score, too (even though it's kind of a mix). The Mechani-Kong theme is one of my Toho faves!

everytime I hear Dr. Who talk I keep waiting to hear him sing "there will be no more toy makers to the king!! Since it sounds like they used the same actor from the Santa Claus is Coming to Town Show sine both werer produced by Rankin and Bass. He was the Meister Brger BergerMeister. It throws me everytime I hear it, and I'm easily thrown!
