Can they both lose?

Because that's what needs to happen.

I suppose I'd give the nod to Mothra for being slightly less boring. Space Godzilla drags on, features a score that doesn't quite work, and has incredibly dumb sub plots. Mothra at least has Battra and Godzilla looks fantastic..plus the final battle doesn't put me to sleep.

Godzilla vs. Mothra, but just barely. It has one or two nice VFX shots and Battra going for it. I find myself hard pressed to say much nice about Spacegodzilla.

Spacegodzilla, I guess. But that's like choosing to be punched in the face over the crotch. It's still a punch, and it still sucks.

Mothra. The movie has massive, massive flaws, but they seem incidental to SG's. The concept of SG himself is interesting, but nearly every facet of the movie falls flat. Moguera's revival is a nice touch of nostalgia, but his mated-vehicle design is more sad than silly. Little Godzilla's design and execution is excruciating. Miki's sci-fi-ier plot is baffling. Most of the human drama is lacking and the acting itself falls right in line with it. It's just a poor, poor effort.

As a Godzilla movie, the biggest problem with GvM is that Godzilla himself feels like an afterthought. I swear someone at Toho dusted off a prospective Mothra script and just added Godzilla, since the focus of the film is clearly the conflict between Mothra and Battra. The humans don't fare a whole lot better here, but there is at least an attempt at grounding them in a recognizable family unit. Battra is a great design, one of my favorite Heisei kaiju (just wish they'd given him an original voice instead of the not-even-modulated Rodan roar).

Pretty clear-cut decision for me here.

I enjoy Godzilla vs. Mothra when I'm in the mood to watch it. It's far from one of my favorites, in fact I think it's one of the most derivative, poorly made movies in the series. I'd even say it's a less competent movie than Mechagodzilla, with both films edging out Spacegodzilla solely because neither of them gets near that level of stupidity. But I do like Godzilla vs. Mothra enough to rewatch it every now and then. Even with all of the flaws in the content itself, I think the film oddly manages to strike one of the breeziest, smoothest paces of any Godzilla movie and it certainly doesn't bore me. It gets my vote.

Spacegodzilla is a movie I've softened on a little bit in recent years. I do think it's objectively the worst Godzilla movie yet made, I rarely find myself wanting to revisit it, and I can still remember how weird it felt for it to be the only Godzilla film I didn't like upon first viewing as a kid. That being said, while I've always considered Spacegodzilla my least favorite Godzilla movie of all, after rewatching all of the films over the past year or so, I can honestly say that I like it more than Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1993) or Godzilla vs. Megaguirus.

Another vote for Mothra 92. It's a chore to sit through but there are a few things I like about it, (Battra, the naval attack against Mothra), while Spacegodzilla is just brutally bad IMO and I'm hard pressed to think of anything I like about it all. In fact it's probably my least favourite film in the whole series.

Uuuuuuuuggghhhhhh, pick my poison, huh?

I guess I'll vote for Spacegodzilla; the movie is a train wreck, but at least there are several interesting ideas present in the story, whereas vs. Mothra plays like a soulless, by-the-numbers remake of the original Mothra, with Godzilla and Battra thrown in for extra "action" (if you can call those lousy bump/beam spats action scenes).
Battra's a better original monster than Spacegodzilla, though.

I'd say Godzila vs Mothra, but just because SpaceGodzilla had so much potential and I still think with a better story, SpaceGodzilla could be on of the most terrible being created, imagine an already powerfull Godzilla with extra powers. The manga version as even better than the vs Mothra version.

What else can you say? In spite of its flaws, TOMG is vastly superior to G98. It's certainly more watchable.

I feel like maybe we should be questioning the judgement of the referee for even letting G'98 on to this bracket in the first place...

TOMG, no contest.
