VERY good article on the new Gamera movie, Keith. Very informative stuff, and nice images to go along with it.
I like both the international English title Gamera: The Brave, and the fact that Jidas' English name is Zedus. That makes sense that they would translate it in that way. I heard that transliteration of the "J" sound from Japanese to English can be translated as "Z" or "DZ". And since the Japanese "Jidas" would be pronounced "JEE-DUSS", it makes sense that the English translation would be "ZEE-DUSS". I like it, because Zedus just sounds all the more badass. And Zedus himself still looks badass as hell.
I must say, it does sound like this movie is getting more work and dedication put into it than I had originally conceived. It's obvious that the crew and cast are giving it their all. From what we've seen, most of the special effects do look excellent, with highly detailed miniatures and monster suits. Though Toto still looks ridiculous, with his stoned-like eyes and all. My main gripe that I have is that the story does sound somewhat cliche and formulaic. It seems like mildly lazy writing to have Toto appear just in the nick of time to save the cast of characters from Zedus. Also, what's with Zedus sinking boats to scarf up little humans that are much smaller than himself, yet opting to return to the ocean for no reason and pass up on a meal of fresh turtle meat right after he wounds Toto? Also, anyone else notice the subtle similarities to War of the Gargantuas in the plot description? Toto is kept by the boy as an infant, then leaves off on it's own, only to re-appear later in the midst of a conflict as a more grown giant monster; just like Sanda in WotG. And Zedus is a monster that sinks fishing boats at sea and eats people, gradually working his way toward the Japanese mainland in which he attacks the main populace; just like Gaira in WotG.
Overall, Gamera: The Brave is looking like it could be a fun family movie with some good points going for it. It doesn't look like it's going to turn out as bad as any of the sucktacular Rebirth of Mothra movies, but I'm still not expecting it to be anything great by any means. It'll probably be a fun family movie, decent overall. That's looking better than I was originally expecting, so my opinion of this movie is moderately positive now.
Nice job on Sci-Fi Japan. Awesome stuff.
