Well, the fact that they're putting 'Monsterverse' on all the products and even alluding to Godzilla in the Kong TV spots certainly speaks to a confidence in doing this thing.
Although it's easy to get all doom-and-gloomy, the truth is that these movies are still in production and scheduled, and as for the situation with Tull: we don't know what's hearsay and what's not. The Variety stuff is probably the most reliable, and they only mention Godzilla and PacRim in passing, but both are inferred to be valuable properties (saying Godzilla was a 'score'), and are seperate from the true flops that are singled out. Any articles saying Tull's fanish backing of giant monster movies as a negative probably reflect that author's intent to grab as many things he or she can find to spice up the details and make for a more interesting article.
... and remember: how Kong and PacRim do in China and overseas overall is probably more important than the domestic gross.
