It's really kinda' weak sauce to argue that there are more movies with Godzilla fighting others monsters than Godzilla fighting man alone so therefore the series is more about the former than the latter. It's like saying OU has a bigger rivalry with Baylor than Notre Dame because they play more games against them.
What I'm saying is the series has always essentially been about Godzilla vs. Man, even when he's fighting another monster. Every single movie (except from Gigan to TOM) Godzilla was either an out-and-out bad guy or a tenuous ally. At the series best the other monster played into that dynamic (Mothra) while at its worst it was just "Insert Monster Here" (SpaceGodzilla).
Of course you can make a movie with Godzilla fighting another monster AND man. What I'm saying is that I would prefer a solo movie for the first picture to establish that central conflict. Like G'54 or G'85. Then for the sequels, bring on the other monsters.
And if we're going to be quoting Brian Rogers and using that against me, let's take another look...
"I think I can safely say that there'll be other monster, or monsters that Godzilla will fight. I think traditionally those are the kind of situations that the fan base wants to see. I think the original Sony version, in my opinion, not having another monster that they're fighting was a drawback more than an asset, and just having Godzilla fight the US army and everything was not the same kind of spirit of the character."
Those are the comments that concerned me. Of course, if you go back and read what I said in non-B&W terms, you'll see that I admit I may be reading too much into it.
They are going to have another monster in there. No one is arguing that. I figured they would all along and Rogers statement confirms that. I'm just saying my preference is for the first film be a solo Godzilla pic to establish the central conflict.
