Yeah, I remembered reading that they didn't want JJ to be in DAMM, but they loosened the leash for him to be in STE. But that's just what I read, I don't know much about it.

Those look more like cheap rip offs of Toho's maser tanks than the real thing, probably because they didn't want to get into any trouble.
