Subtitles for this film are dead to me. Go Dub or go home!

Most people probably already have this, but for Amazon prime members, it's on sale for a pretty good deal at the moment. prime day has offered other Godzilla DVD & BRD as well, but nothing really super outstanding.

There are no more good TV Shows, only ones that haven't disappointed me yet.

Boycotted Prime Day in solidarity with the workers' strike but that's cool they've been discounting Godzilla stuff.

I also tried to avoid any Amazon subsidiaries these last two days.

... accidentally broke that vow early yesterday morning when I absentmindedly watched an episode of Mirrorman on Prime (via Toku).

... but other than that? I ain't no scab, except for Mirrorman that one time.

Well, it seems the physical release is out of print and it's no longer available digitally.

... when Shin Godzilla comes back to print will it be through Criterion or Toho directly? Place your bets!

(Of course, my dream would be Criterion does all three Shin films)

I can't believe that movie is nearly a decade old already. Or that we've had three Hollywood Godzilla movies since then. Where did the time go?

When Shin Godzilla was released, Barack Obama was still the US president, Peter Capaldi was still playing the Doctor, the Summer Olympics were held in Rio de Janeiro, Netflix had only been producing their own shows for three years and still did their DVD-by-mail service, Covid-19 didn't exist yet, the newest Marvel Studios movies were Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange, and this message board was still fully functional.

Well, seems GKIDS just applied to the MPAA for a rating for Shin Godzilla, so it certainly seems like they'll be handling the new release. Crossing my fingers for 4K, orthochromatic, and extras!

Wouldn't suprise me if the Minus One release eventually switches over to being produced by them. Maybe if the GKIDS acquisition had been a little earlier they would've handled it from the beginning and it would've been less scattershot?

I wonder if a Shin Godzilla release from a Toho-owned GKIDS would have the theatrical presentation of the movie with all of the onscreen Japanese text intact. Funimation's release featured a clean presentation with all of the text included as English subtitles. The version of Minus One on Netflix has all of the onscreen Japanese text (location markers, etc.) replaced with English text, while the version that Toho released on disc has the theatrical presentation with onscreen Japanese text.

Rundown of the various editions for the upcoming home video re-release:

- standard Blu-ray: feature disc and extras disc
- standard 4K: feature disc and extras disc (extras disc is Blu-ray)
- steelbook: 4K feature disc, Blu-ray feature disc, extras disc
- Godzillastore exclusive: 4K feature disc, Blu-ray feature disc, Blu-ray Orthocromatic feature disc, extras disc (+booklet)

This is similar to the variants offered of Minus One, except with the store exclusive being dramatically improved as a full on English language release instead of a Japanese release with English subs only for the feature. It's the clear winner for me, and even if another variant is announced I doubt it could be more complete than this one.

The only way in which this doesn't mirror the different editions of Godzilla Minus One is that GKids currently doesn't appear to be planning a DVD release of Shin Godzilla.

Gruv has a collection page up now listing the three different retail editions, currently without a release date: https://gruv.com/collections/shin-godzilla

The Godzilla Store product page for the four-disc set lists an estimated ship date of October 2025 and provides details of the disc contents: https://godzilla.com/products/shin-godzilla-4k-blu-ray-deluxe-collectors-edition

They seem to be actively trying to make these different editions less confusing than with Minus One by giving each disc its own distinct color, no matter which edition you get. The red disc is the movie on blu-ray, the purple disc is the movie on 4K, the black disc is Orthochromatic on blu-ray, and the white disc is the extras on blu-ray. The white disc is in every edition while the black disc is exclusive to the Godzilla Store set. That's easy to follow, although it's only half as helpful to colorblind people, which I guess might be why they made the blu-ray disc red instead of blue.

The movie includes Japanese and English audio options on each disc as well as English, English SDH, Spanish and French subtitle options. The extras have burned-in English subtitles.

The page lists a combined runtime of 224 minutes for the extras. This is what's included:

- Promotional Video Collection
- Making Of SHIN GODZILLA
- Deleted Scenes
- Outtakes
- News Reels
- Previs Reel Collection
- Previs and Special Effects Outtakes
- Visual Effects Breakdown
- Trailer 1
- Trailer 2
- Teaser 1
- Teaser 2

I don't own Toho's three-disc or four-disc Japanese sets from 2017 but Wikizilla lists a breakdown of the extras in those sets: https://wikizilla.org/wiki/Shin_Godzilla#Video_releases

- Trailers, promos, and TV spots (27 minutes)
- footage from promotional events (113 minutes)
- previsualization and storyboards (28 minutes)
- additional previsualization and tokusatsu footage (20 minutes)
- alternate and deleted scenes (45 minutes)
- TV footage shot for the film (35 minutes)
- VFX breakdown (18 minutes)
- general behind-the-scenes featurette (31 minutes)

If Wikizilla's listed runtimes are accurate, the combined runtime of the extras is 317 minutes on Toho's Japanese sets. I'm certainly not griping about getting 3 hours and 44 minutes of English-subtitled extras on this upcoming release but I do wonder about the 93 minutes that apparently are being left out. I guess some of that is promos and TV spots, since the Japanese release apparently has 27 minutes of them while this upcoming set lists just two teasers and two trailers. Maybe the promotional video collection doesn't include all 113 minutes of the footage from promotional events. Then again, maybe these runtimes are inaccurate all around and everything from the Japanese sets will be included after all.

Has there been any word on the method used for Shin's remaster? Is it a conventional upscale or an AI-"assisted" abomination?

^ I haven't yet seen this re-release, and while I can't confirm that AI wasn't used in some unwelcome way here, I believe that Shin Godzilla was shot and edited in digital 4K, so there would be no need to upscale it from 2K resolution. Toho released it on 4K disc in Japan back in 2017.

I've read a few reports from eagle-eyed viewers and there's been no mention of extra digital trickery.

There have been a few comments to the effect that the digital effects were originally finished in 2K so their resolution is a smidgen softer than the live action footage if you're really looking.
