Raiders of the Lost Ark for the umpteenth time, still such a fun movie.
I also recently watched Temple of Doom, which is also pretty fun (yes I'm doing them in "chronological" order).

Watched Terror of MechaGodzilla, Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla, and Godzilla vs Megalon via the Criterion Set (going in reverse order).
I started on Godzilla vs Gigan, but didn't feel like watching it currently.

Also watched Iron Sky via Amazon Prime Videos, a rather corny movie, but also looked really good for a "B-Movie".

Aladdin Live Action - That was actually... not all that bad. The costumes and dance choreography were spectacular, especially for the Prince Ali song and the party scene. Will Smith gave a mighty performance that really made the whole movie work even when the rest of it faltered. Unfortunately, Jafar is hands down the worst character as he did NOTHING the entire thing. He barely even had a presence at all. It's like why did they even bother having him in this thing? It could have just been some no named criminal and it would have had the same effect. The other negatives include the very rushed first act, the brand new SJW song they gave Jasmine, the lack of any true consequences against Sorcerer Jafar as no one was ever in any danger of dying, and the SJW ending. Seriously, that was laughably bad. Like if you want to have your kingdom revolt against you, that is how you do it. :D Nevertheless, I went in expecting the worst and came out with a, "That was worth a one time watch." 7/10

In preparation for going to the Texas Renaissance Festival a couple weekends ago, I watched a few 80’s fantasy films to get in the mood.

Dragonslayer: This has been on my list to get to for years, maybe decades. I’m happy to say it did not disappoint! It’s everything I would have wanted it to be and the dragon effects were awesome! I’d happily watch this film again anytime.

Ladyhawke: I only discovered this film a few weeks ago when someone posted a picture of Rutger Hauer in medieval garb sitting atop a massive black horse with a falcon perched on his gloved arm.

Image

It’s also a pretty good 80’s fantasy film but not as good as Dragonslayer. It draws out some of the emotional scenes for far too long making them kinda cringey and negating the impact they should have. Also, it has possibly the worst score I’ve ever heard in a film! It’s TERRIBLE! It’s this awful upbeat 80’s synth music that feels entirely out of place. And it’s not even good 80’s synth music. It’s TERRIBLE 80’s synth music! YouTube it! It’s so bad! I feel like I’d be willing to watch this movie again but only if I have control of the mute button!

Finished off the rest of the MCU with the exception of Captain Marvel just because I didn't feel like watching it this time around. I wasn't a fan of it when I saw it in the theaters so I'll save it for the next time I watch the MCU in its entirety. Thoughts on the 4K transfer below:

Thor Ragnorak- This had a pretty decent 4K transfer, the color really popped on it thanks to it's colorful back drop. As for the film itself I really like this out of the other two Thor movies easily the best of the bunch. A nice mix of comedy and action.

Avengers Infinity War- Easily the second best 4K transfer of the Phase 3 movies. Near flawless picture. As for the movie itself I really enjoyed it while its not as good as the next Avengers title its fairly good.

Ant-Man and the Wasp-I had high hopes for this 4K transfer because the first one was so amazing but this was a huge step down, its not the worst of all the MCU movies but its not as good as the other films this phase. As for the movie itself like the first movie it surprised me and I really enjoyed it.

Avengers Endgame- Pretty close in terms of IW in terms of PQ but that one just sneaks by this one so I'd put this as maybe the 4th best because I think Guardians 2 had a better HDR transfer than this one. As for the movie I thought it was awesome a nice finish to a 22 movie span.

Spider-Man Far From Home- This had the best 4K transfer of the entire MCU Phase 3, Sony did an amazing job with the picture as well as the HDR, is it as good as Aquaman for reference quality? No but its a damn good transfer. As for the movie itself I thought it was pretty amazing, easily my favorite Spidey film to date. I really like Mysterio they did an excellent job with the character.

Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla - It's basically the same plot as Megaguirus, but good. Top notch in everything. Easily the third greatest Godzilla movie ever made.

Tokyo SOS - It may rehash some stuff from the Showa era, and it's biggest mistake is sending the characters from the previous film away, but it is still a damn good fun ride and a great conclusion to what is the perfect Godzilla trilogy.

Knives Out

This movie rocks. Seriously, one of the best theatrical experiences I've had all year. Unless something real big changes in the next month this is easily in my #2 slot of favorite films for this year (Parasite is #1). I'd say more, but since it's a murder mystery that would spoil the fun. Think Agatha Christie with a side of Columbo.

BTW, why all the 'house' movies this year? Parasite, Knives Out, Crawl, Ready or Not... even Us almost qualifies, though they leave the house halfway through. These were some of the best films of the year, too! I wonder if there is a sociological reason for this.

Immortal - Uh... it's basically about Egyptian gods returning to Earth so Horus can rape a mutant girl. There's something about a corrupt politician in it too, but he's irrelevant and dies off screen and some red shark assassin thing that apparently attacked a cop a while back, but that's also irrelevant as they never meet face to face. Yeah, god no, this thing was dreadful. I can't even tell if they were trying to make a CGI movie or a live action movie. 1/10

^ The promotion didn't clue you in to Armas being one of the leads, so I was pleasantly surprised. I've been a fan of her's since Blade Runner 2049. Hope she becomes a big star.

Final Wars - It's like someone said, "Hey, I got a great idea, let's take the plot from the Trendmasters Toy Line in America and turn it into a movie."

Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack

Uh, oh. Those rowdy mobile suit pilots, Char and Amuro, are at it again with their unresolved interpersonal issues that seem to be tied to their weird sexual hangups. You know there's only one way to solve this: big space war. Millions, possibly billions of people may die, but these two boys are going to have to hash it out!

Seriously, it was a lot of fun to see this on the big screen. You know, I haven't seen this film since it aired on Adult Swim in 2003. The only things I remembered about it were the final 3rd with the big Mobile Suit battle around the asteroid and the t-shaped device that amplified newtype powers. Heck, it made me wonder if I didn't miss the entire first half of the movie back in the day. None of the earlier stuff rang any bells!

So, I just saw Gundam in the theater, I have my tickets for Promare this weekend, and I'm reading all of Akira before 2019 is over. I'm just weebing it up over here.

The Last Jedi - Well "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!", after all that time I spent defending this movie, I feel like an idiot. Oh, I knew there were flaws with it. I never denied that. However, after having watched TFA last night and now coming to this immediately after, I noticed a lot more. The First Order is still a bunch of bumbling man babies, Snoke is still absolutely worthless, and the purple haired "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" had no right to withhold information from Poe, but jesus, nothing was accomplished at all in this film at all. I was utterly bored with it. How did I not find this boring the first time I watched it 2 years ago? There were so many pointless scenes that served no purpose to the narrative, there was little to no chemistry between the cast, and even the cool fight sequence with Rey and Kylo against the red guardsmen seemed quite superficial this time around. I want to bang my head against the wall.

But I shouldn't get upset, this movie can still be redeemed with a solid finale, right? RIGHT?

Godzilla 2014 - While it may not have the greatest characters in the franchise, it is a truly well made spectacle with just enough monster action to keep you going. Not to mention the gorgeous cinemtography, especially from the Halo jumping scene. 8/10

You know, now that I think about it, Amuro seems to have become pretty well-adjusted by this stage, as a matter of fact, he seems to not want any of this drama that Char has projected onto him. Char wants to make the world this exaggerated restaging of his glory days with him going up against his arch-rival and Amuro does not care at all about that.

Holy heck! Trigger has turned out the most enthralling, over the top heroic sci-fi visual spectacles since... well, since one year ago when Spider-Verse came out.

It's big, it's loud, it's fun. Classic anime tropes are inflated to the point of absurdity and then far past that. The action sequences are so glorious and expressionistic you'll find yourself just wearing a dumb smile the whole time. The music is cool. Everything about the movie is cool. See it, and just for the heck of it don't read up anything about it beforehand!

Shin Godzilla - Still not sure how I feel about this one. It's not a bad movie, but it's not a good Godzilla movie. I also do not need to know the name and location to every single room the characters go to, nor the names of every single person and job description who is vastly insignificant to the movie. There's only about 5 characters that actually matter, and those are the only ones I need to know about. Everyone else is just background noise. Oh yeah, there's a Godzilla somewhere in this film hidden away as if this were "Where's Godzilla?" page. Not sure/10.

Monster Shark/ Devilfish- 8 out of 10. Nice late seventies/ early eighties Jaws-inspired movie. Its Sharktopus before Sharktopus was a thing.

Muppet Christmas Carol - Not the best adaptation, but still a fine good one. 8/10.

Kaiju Mono: man this was just weird!
Not sure if Sentai dubbed it goofy on purpose, but there was a lot of 4th wall stuff, and adlibs.
The monster was decent looking and the effects were pretty good.
Having actual pro wrestlers fight a giant monster was fun.

X-Men Dark Phoenix - You know what the difference is between The Last Stand and Dark Phoenix? At least you can have fun with how bad The Last Stand is. Dark Phoenix is an utter borefest. Boring characters doing boring things with a boring, predictable outcome. It also doesn't help that the X-Men only wear their uniforms for the first 10 minutes of the movie and then it's back to just another generic ass plain clothes people with super powers. If I wanted to bore myself with that, I'd watch Heroes. Additionally, this film has no sense of what pacing is. It's like they took a 5 part hour long miniseries and condensed it into a 115 minute movie. Was I supposed to care about Jean's dilemma? If I was, they sure failed considering I knew little to nothing about this character. Also, for being 9 years after the last film, no one has aged more than a year or two. Professor X and Beast should be 30 years older and yet they barely look 5. Overall, while it could have been a whole lot worse, it is most definitely one of the worst movies of the year just in how insipid it is. Let us pray that with the X-Men back at Marvel we can finally get a real X-Men film that respects the source material as opposed to this convoluted dumpster fire. I'm giving it a 3/10 and that is ony because of the scene in the train when Magneto kicks ass. Speaking of which, whatever happened to the subplot from the last film of him being Quicksilver's father? That wasn't even mentioned here.
