There are no more good TV Shows, only ones that haven't disappointed me yet.

I don't say this to come down on you, just that your story about your son is funny to me because my first experience with Godzilla was at age three when my mom insisted on renting King of the Monsters for me despite my pitching a fit because it was not the movie I wanted to rent. I wound up being completely transfixed by it even though it also scared the bejesus out of me, haha.

Still, I do sympathize with your concerns, I just don't see the point of attacking Criterion for trying to perpetuate these movies somehow, especially when the blame clearly lies with Toho (and perhaps a little with Media Blasters).

I brought this up earlier, but could it be that Classic Media chose to destroy their UPA/AIP elements when their rights expired? We all know Toho lacks U.S. elements to GRA, MvsG, Ghidrah and Godzilla's Revenge, and this is the first time they've been unavailable since the rights have reverted back to Toho. :?:

I'm also curious if Toho has Sony's HD transfers of SON OF GODZILLA, SEA MONSTER, GIGAN, HEDORAH & MECHAGODZILLA as they let Kraken use 3 of them for their BRD releases. I'd be SOO happy if they at least used those for SoG & MG!!! The Sony transfers are so colorful and sharp, it'd be hard to watch Toho's transfers of them (even if they're in HD) after having the Sony/Kraken discs for so long.

I have a bootleg Blu-ray of KING KONG VS. GODZILLA and I can see why Criterion would choose to place it as a bonus feature as the "missing" scenes are very noticeably from a different source. I definitely was not expecting them to go the extra mile and license KKvsG from Universal/Toho, so kudos to them for making it happen.

Well that at least confirms the latter. I can tell you for 100% certainty however (even though I don't have the DVD anymore) . I bought ToMG in May 1998 on DVD. It was my first DVD ever, and it definitely was in a snap case. I had just graduated college, and as a gift my father had agreed to let me purchase a custom Gateway Computer which had a DVD Rom (spared no expense) I bought it at a store called Incredible Universe which was eventually bought out by Fry's. You never forget your first dvd...especially when it was Godzilla

*edit* I did just see one in a CD-type jewel case on ebay, seems like a boot to me, but I could be wrong.

Ugh, I need to stop reading this miserable thread before I lose the will to live. The amount of sour grapes slushing around here could fulfil the world's vinegar needs for a year. Before I go:

A PERSONAL REQUEST TO ALL OF YOU

I get that some people in the kaiju fandom have religiously-held beliefs about what constitutes an acceptable Godzilla blu-ray release. All I ask is that you keep the arguments constrained to these forums. Don't start writing insulting emails to Criterion, and for the love of god do not leave 1-star reviews on the pre-order page at online retailers before this set is even released. I get that you're angry, but please, as a personal favour to me, please do not f*** this release up for those of us who are looking forward to it.

If this set was worth its price (dual-language for every movie) or priced at where it's worth (with the set as-is? $60), I'd be less incensed.

I’m not angry. I’m just disappointed. I’m not one of those stupid trolls who puts reviews up for something I don’t own. I don’t write hatemail to the companies that makes these products.

But I do voice my concerns and disappointment on message boards. It’s really the one place I have to get out all my thoughts and feelings about something like this. It’s cathartic in a way. I’m sorry if anyone thinks I’m pooping in their Cheerios. Not all of us are happy with the news so far. And we have every right to discuss that disappointment.

For me film history is important. Actively watching the US cuts (especially the unique ones like Godzilla vs The Thing) be lost to time as we speak is disheartening and frustrating. It’s also frustrating to know I’ll have to keep piles of other releases and can projects on hand to share these films with my young kids. Like Jelly my kids are 3 & 5 and they LOVE Godzilla. We went to G-fest this month and they thought it was the coolest thing they’d ever done! Just this morning my kids were asking to watch a Godzilla movie again. My 5 year old hums the Godzilla theme constantly and has been for months! So yeah, the dub issue is frustrating and disappointing.

But that’s not a total deal breaker. But that combined with the idea of them being Toho’s 2008 transfers? That’s like double kick in the nuts. Those transfers suck! When we heard about the dubs I at least though, “well that sucks but it’ll still be a must buy with typical Criterion-level transfers of all the Japanese cuts! How exciting!!” But NOPE!

I’m still waiting to hear the final specs and see actual reviews, but the news and info so far is incredibly disheartening.

As of now, I have a sad. A very big one.

Just read that Criterion intends to release this in the UK as well. That is massive. UK fans have been dramatically underserved, hardly any releases on disc.

If they cancelled their 1000th release, it would destroy their reputation. Then again, if the rumors are to be believed, their reputation may be ruined either way.
