Netflix Lost in Space - April 13, 2018

There was a teaser trailer released recently. This, however, is the first official full trailer. I will say this, the production values for this are insane for a TV show. They're practically theatrical. I just hope the writing, direction, and performances live up to it. I like the design for the Jupiter 2, although I am taken aback a little by the Robot. Still, I'm keeping an open mind. As much as I like the original TV series, it evolved into something almost as, if not as campy as the Adam West Batman TV series. While that itself is one of the original show's charms, that approach just wouldn't fly with today's audiences. I at least hope the Netflix show will retain a certain level of child-like awe and wonder at the settings and situations/adventures the Robinson family gets caught up in and warmth among the family themselves. I hope they don't try to make this too edgy.

I think this looks great! Certainly feature film quality visuals.

Seems like the earliest episodes of the original series: a serious stab at transposing Swiss Family Robinson's survival situation into a space adventure, adding the 'boy and his robot' aspect that became important for the entire run of the series... though now a mysterious alien robot instead of a factory model that came with the ship. That change actually makes a bit of sense: the robot became so special to Lost in Space, so it makes sense that they'd change the story so that he's not just an off-the-shelf model.

The design of the robot cribs a bit from modern sci-fi designs, as opposed to the distinctly original design of the original. That's my only complaint.

Not digging the Robot design, but looks neat otherwise. I personally DON'T get why they feel the need to re-invent the wheel with the Robot as it's one of the few truly iconic aspects of the show (in terms of DESIGN), but it certainly looks appealing visually overall.

Sad...Dick Tufeld is no longer with us to provide the voice. Him reprising the Robot in the 1998 film was the highlight. But this looks interesting, Ill give it a watch.

^ Parker Posey is playing Dr. Smith. I'd love if she went as camp as in Josie and the Pussycats, but I doubt that...

Watched it all, really enjoyed it. I understand changing the robot, maybe I would have left it a little more like the classic B-9 design, but it was fun.
I really hope there's a second season because I love Lost in Space and its nice to have it back again, even for a little bit.

Hard to tell with Netflix being so secretive about viewing numbers, but anecdotally it seems people really like the new show. Several people I know who aren't nerds of any kind and have little prior knowledge of the franchise have watched the entire thing and loved it.

we've been enjoying this. With a TV-PG rating we can watch it with the kid which is nice.

The first episode was pretty good. A little corny at times, but I suppose that’s in keeping with the original series. Will definitely be watching the rest of it.

I've only watched the first 2 episodes. It seems ok so far. Normally I don't care for the PC direction of gender flipped characters, but the way they did it was actually a nice twist. Some other aspects I'm not to keen on, but I'm willing to see how they play out.

the new Dr. Smith is pretty evil in such a subversive way. It really is probably one of the biggest strength of the series until spoiler territory.

The 90's film added depth without changing the characters from what they were to start out with. Again, I'm not saying this show is bad. I'm up to episode 5 now and will keep watching. It's a pretty good show about a family Lost on a Planet, and the survivors of a mission to Alpha Centauri. But it's not Lost in Space. They should have just changed the name of the family (NOT the Robinsons) , and called it Lost in Space: TNG, and it would be all good.

It's kind of like if in 1987 if TNG was just brought back as "Star Trek" plain and simple, with no reference to anything else, people would have hated it. (And I'm not talking about the initial hate of original Star Trek fans, I mean , it never would have caught on and been successful).

In direct opposition to O.Supereme's take, the guy who runs the really neat Vintage Geek Culture blog liked the new Lost in Space partially because it confirmed several bits of 'headcanon' he'd always had about the original series!

First episode down.

It's...okay.

The dad is annoyingly one-note. The story is just "and then, and then and then"
They're crashing AND THEN the mom is hurt AND THEN the ships sinks AND THEN they have to go dive to the ship AND THEN they get stuck in ice AND THEN they have to go get the thing to get her out of the ice AND THEN there's a problem getting the thing AND THEN, AND THEN, AND THEN.
The production value is really REALLY good, and there's some ambition and a touch of heart.

Torn on whether or not to continue, honestly.

Keep going, it gets better. The actors/characters never quite rise to the level of the material they’re covering (except Dr. Smith...) but it does get better as it goes on. The cast is serviceable, if not stand-out great, and they do all get better as the show progresses and they find their various rhythms. But the production value and the actual story rise above the slightly less than A level casting to create a pretty darn good sci-fi show.
