It's just a trailer, but ugh, the tone is really "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" up. Really wants to have its cake and eat it too with evoking Vietnam, at the same time selling a less somber experience than Edwards' Godzilla. I like John C. Reilly, but uh...

Also that monster design is so lame. Just more post-Cloverfield bullshit.

I am more accepting of PJ's Kong than most, all that being said, this looks amazing. I am officially excited now.

I agree the tonal shift was a bit jarring at first, but it settles in after a couple more watches. And I'd much rather be jarred now than when I'm sitting in the theater like I was with G14. Ultimately it didn't color my final assessment of that film, but I DEFINATELY gave a bad first impression.

But aside from that, I think the trailer looks great! This looks like the Kong film I've always wanted (besides the original). I love the direction we're seeing with Kong himself, the other monsters, the island... everything.

There's no part of that trailer I didn't like. I'm digging it. Really looking forward to this.

Regarding the tone, I think it's consistent throughout the trailer. The tone is jarring when compared to the first trailer but that one was made for Comic-Con and put online for people who already wanted to see it. As awesome as that trailer was, I don't know if it's played in theaters at all since it debuted online in July. I didn't see it before Suicide Squad. This trailer is how Warner Bros. is pitching Kong: Skull Island to general audiences who may not be aware of it yet, premiering it on Jimmy Kimmel's show and I'm sure playing it before every screening of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them this weekend.

My opinion of the trailer improved after the second viewing. I was planning to see the movie in any case, but the trailer doesn't deter me from doing so. Come to think of it, based on the setting, vibrant colours, and the trailer's tone, this might be a kaiju film of the kind we've been sorely missing since Son of Godzilla. Granted, I expect Kong: Skull Island to be more serious ultimately. I'm just satisfied to see a departure from urban settings to natural ones. I'll be disappointed if this Kong ends up back in civilization by the movie's end. (Nothing I've seen indicates that'll be the case, but I am a touch suspicious.)

One random thing I appreciated: the brief shot of the giant water buffalo. Never thought I'd see a creature like that in a Kong or Godzilla film.

1:40 of the trailer. The Kong's died holding hands. How adorable.

I see the skull crawlers come in various sizes. I imagine there are some even bigger ones (big enough to give Kong some serious trouble) that are not in this trailer.

I love how we see giant mammals, reptiles, and insects/arachnids in this trailer. Feeling real good now about the decision to move away from dinosaurs and instead populate Skull Island with various original monsters.

^It's also on the Blu-Ray. All the special features from the tin box (minus the included postcards and theater program reproduction but plus a booklet built into the packaging) made the jump from DVD to Blu-Ray.

--- edit ---

Judging from the trailer I'm guessing we have a subplot:

Finally got around to watching the second Skull Island trailer. Looks awesome, as far as the monster stuff goes. Not so sure about the jokey tone shift, but I'll wait until the final product hits the screens before I start dissecting & ranting & frothing.

I am interested in that the basic premise, from the time it takes place to the bits I picked up in the second trailer, that this film seems to be borrowing heavily from '76 Kong. Wondering if what the ship is in search of is oil, like the '76 film? Would make sense in the timeline in which it takes place. Very cool that they are merging the '33 & '76 Kong looks/build/posture so that he's not just a big gorilla loping around on all fours (boring), but is actually a genuine crypto monster. The mammoth water buffalo was a cool surprise, too. Just don't show us anymore stuff and spoil the fun. I must say, this is shaping up to be a grand adventure flick. I wonder if Legendary has negotiated rights to other Warner monsters? It would be neat to have the Beast from 20k Fathoms show up in a lake on the island, or the Ymir, etc., etc. I really hope that by the time Godzilla vs. Kong rolls around that Legendary will have scooped up the rights to more of Toho's stable; specifically Angillas (a lifelong favorite) & Titanosaurus (because the world simply needs more Titanosaurus!).

That would be cool, but seeing as how LP's new deal is with Universal, and not WB (where it formerly was)...not sure how this could happen, but then again, throw enough money at something, and just about anything in movies can happen.

Scooping up all of Warner's jumbo monsters just seems like a no-brainer, really. They own 'em so they could easily just let Legendary have them, so to speak. And what wonderful Easter egg/fan service stuff it would be to see the Black Scorpion, Rhedosaurus, Them! and so forth, even if only in cameos. They'd all certainly fit within the context of an island full of genuine monsters, not just dinosaurs, but honest-to-goodness "what the heck is THAT!?" type monsters. What a joy that would be. If Toho plays it too stingy with their stable of mon-stars then the post GvK films (so many here and elsewhere are dreaming of a DAM remake), could have the likes of Warner's jumbo creature cast filling up the roster. Because... well... why the hell not??

But the Universal/Warner swaperoo with Legendary still has me scratching my noggin. I'm sorta confused... are all the G-films after G'14 going to be under Universal's banner or Warner's (or some Bizarro World mixture of both)? If it's Universal, I'm trying to picture which giant monsters they have ownership of that could be dropped into the Monarch-verse?

Warner Bros. is the co-financier and distributor of Kong: Skull Island and all of Legendary's upcoming Godzilla/Kong projects, so Warner-owned characters are on the table. It's just a matter of whether anyone working on these films would even consider something like the Rhedosaurus at all.
