Rocky Horror Picture Show remake - Another garbage remake that misses the point of the original.
Let's start with the good.
1. If you never saw the original or did not care for how dated it could be, this movie is excellent!
2. Tim Curry, bless his soul, tried his hardest with ailing health to be what the Criminologist in the original film was.
3. Laverne Cox was a fantastic Frank N. Furter. My god, she had the energy, passion, and love for what she was doing. Very similar to Tim Curry, which you could see she respected.
4. Riff Raff's actor, who I do not know much about was very much like Richard O'Brien. Unlike Laverne, he tried to emulate O'Brien more so than taking is how spin at the character. If he is a new actor and early in his career, this is a good thing. If he is not, then that could be a problem. This is the same with Brad's character. He also took me back to Barry Bostwick and acted like a complete dork.
5. Each musical number was more engaging, compared to the original film, which was more like the play. The background characters were more active and showed personality. This is one thing that I do appreciate here.
6. Rocky was just like the original film. Cannot complain there!
7. The costuming was very current to this eras style, compared to the 70's for the original film.
Here is the bad!
1. Janet, Magenta, and Columbia's actress were complete "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!". Not that they could not sing, which they did great there, but their ability to act was non existent. They all appeared to be trying to hard compared to the other actors.
2. Eddie and Dr Scott also were very terrible. Not sure how they are even related in this film either...
3. Eddie's death scene was neutered. While one could argue this is due to being on television, the original was not really violent. However, it held an impact that this movie did not give.
4. They did not even actually do the ****ing time warp. The song was there, but the choreography was for something else entirely.
5. The sound was not mixed properly. Dialog sounded great, but the songs sounded like they were prerecorded.
6. The costuming was modern, yes, but it was also too obnoxious at some points. For example it made me wonder if some of the makeup artists had ADD when putting things together.
7. 95% of the dialog was the same to the movie and stage play, however some it was changed to fit modern audiences. Not much, but what was changed did not fit the flow of the older dialog all the time. (This is excluding where they change he to she when referencing Frankie. That makes sense.)
8. The dinner scene did not hold any energy either. They sat at one long table next to each rather than like a normal dinner table.
While I know that these negatives could be nitpicks, but I disagree. If you say that you are going to honor the original, it is important to cast, write, and encourage your actors to do a great job. For some this worked, while others (including my favorites), this was not there.
I would give this movie an 6/10 for a great effort.
