/film:

Now it appears the more irrational hate for the movie has resulted in some kind of coordinated attack on the internet that has resulted in the Ghostbusters reboot trailer becoming the most disliked movie trailer in YouTube history.

I want to like this new Ghostbusters movie, but I've seen enough from the trailers and clips to make me concerned. Expanding the Ghostbusters franchise has real potential; this movie could even be the start of a GB multiverse with a future movie featuring this team crossing over with the original movies' universe.

A couple months ago, I guess that's when the last trailer was released, someone over in AICN's comments noted that what was presented in the trailer looked more like a Ghostbusters spoof movie rather than a proper Ghostbusters movie.

Wait, this IS a full on remake? (McCarthy can call it a reboot all she wants but her actual description is firmly a reMAKE) I haven't been following it too closely but I thought it was supposed to be an actual sequel in the same universe as the originals. Now that I know it's entirely disconnected from the original films I've completely lost all interest.

It's a marketing move. Remakes have fallen out of favor, but sequels that trade on nostalgia so heavily they might as well be remakes are the new it thing, so of course the marketing team is trying to position the movie that way.

Well, no matter what comes of this movie, good or bad (and I totally think making an 'extended universe' is stupid at this point - just make one movie!), the main takeaway for me is that supposed 'Ghostbusters fans' have come across as rather unsavory. When GINO came out were we this bad to Emmerich and Devlin? I know we care about these things deeply, but be mad at the movie, don't harass actual people.

Maybe if he didn't make a movie from a beloved franchise that looks like complete crap people wouldn't be tearing him apart.

But everything (slight exaggeration) gets complete crap remakes and people don't go this balistic! I mean, even at it's worst I doubt this new Ghostbusters movie can possibly be as bad as the new Robocop or the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and while those were critically reviled, they didn't inspire such a furory.

It's only a movie, and you shouldn't tear people apart for making movies beyond criticizing their talent/ability/performance, and you should never threaten anyone with violence/death/rape for any reason whatsoever, I don't care how bad their movies are.

I remember Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles getting a ton of flack for being remade. But as far as Robocop and other franchise remake duds, not all fandoms are created equal. The Ghostbusters fandom is fairly large and the studio isn't just changing some colors of the uniforms/ecto-1 etc They're turning a horror/comedy about blue collar guys into what looks like a soulless generic slapstick comedy wannabe. Robocop looked mediocre in the trailers. This straight up looks awful. Also I agree any type of threat is silly and childish but if you get enough people together, there are going to be a few nutjobs.

This is one of those things that's so hard to comment on...because a LOT of these people, even if it wound up being a GREAT movie, are the types of a-holes who were complaining about it being women.

I mean, I'll admit, I was complaining a bit about it being women but my reasons were: (1) going "ALL WOMEN" as a mandate is just as dumb as going "ALL MEN," to me. (2) once we heard this cast, I knew we were in trouble. Wiig and McCarthy are wildly unfunny to me.

The people I'm referring to though, are the people who complained that this was somehow misandrist and indicative of a "need" to "force" women into "everything" (and ignoring that a movie like Lucy can gross $500 mil on basically Scarlett Johansson alone and her next LEAD role in a film won't be until 3 years later...AND the "Black Widow" movie is happening "eventually...shut-up we'll get to it...probably not").

On the other hand...the movie looks terrible, by all accounts (thus far) IS terrible, and negative reactions to bad remakes/long-awaited sequels are at an all-time high considering how many have been done well in recent years.

Fathom Events has been sponsoring special showings of older movies for a few years now. It seems almost every time I go to the movies, I see ads for showings of Top Gun, Ferris Bueller, etc... etc... and of course Ghostbusters.

After seeing Civil War however... my friends and I discussed the latest showings of the original Ghostbusters (throughout May) in order to promote the new film. Sure it is a good way to promote. But then we thought... Are the fans who are willing to see the original in theaters (that they already probably have on DVD & Blu Ray at home) really going to be drawn to like the new film? --Do you really want the classic beloved film fresh in everyone's minds as they go to see this new film?... could possibly make things worse. Sure...even minded critics are going to say you cant compare the two films, but that's what everyone is inevitably going to do.

If the film does go bad... like 2015 F4 bad. I cant wait to see the inevitable feminist comments "Well I guess it was just too intelligent and ahead of its time...the world is not ready yet..."

Here is my reasoning for being slightly annoyed by this movie. It has to do with it being all women but not for obvious reasons. It has to do with Sony. Sony is run by a bunch of shitbirds and this Ghostbusters brain child from them I find rather patronizing. They made this movie as if everyone would stop and look at each other and say, "Oh my God... this Ghostbusters cast is ALL WOMEN?! TAKE MY MONEY?!" So I just laughed this off not realizing Sony was actually going to go through with it.

Now seeing these painfully bland trailers with cringe inducing "laughs" just makes this whole thing stink more.

My only problem with the all-female cast is that it seems like Sony (and especially Feig) are using it as a barrier against making a crappy movie.
"Oh you don't like it? You must be sexist."
Feig has already been tweeting things like "The new Ecto-1 is powered by feelings and tampons."

My distaste for this movie is twofold: first (and foremost and like 95%) because it looks bad. I don't like McCarthy, I don't like Wiig, (these two based on MANY previous films I've actually seen them in) and Jones comes across wildly unfunny in these trailers too. Three out of four? Yeesh. The effects, wow...the first trailer I was like "eh, okay, there's a style here...and it's probably somewhat unfinished" but the more we're seeing, the worse it looks.

the second reason though is that there's no ability to genuinely talk about this movie without stepping into the feminism/misogyny/misandry argument, and the side I'm on, of disliking the movie, is also the side that has the jerks who actually DO hate it JUST because it has women.

^Well said. In the weeks/months following the films release. I suggest anyone who wants to avoid being labeled *if* you happen to not like the film is to simply say -"I really have no opinion because I haven't seen it" -for me this will be truth, but if anyone chooses to lie, in this case,I wont judge you

I'm holding out hope that these are just "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" trailers. I love McCarthy and Jones, but Kristen Wiig is not a great lead, and certainly not in the same league as Bill Murray. I can't help wonder if the role written for someone else (Tina Fey?) who turned it down after seeing the script. The funniest thing in either trailer were the people taking selfies :/
