JD hated GMK and claimed its box office success could be attributed to the Hamtaro film that was released with it.

G-Fan is still a thing? I remember scouring comic shops for issues to get Godzilla news back in the pre-internet days, but I thought it faded away years ago.

There are no more good TV Shows, only ones that haven't disappointed me yet.

I'm currently in denial, but signs point to this being true (i.e. Bob's remark that they couldn't get the giant prop working, a Japanese article about how Higuchi is trying to rival America's effects work). Seems so wrong-headed.

It just seems so antithetical to what their goals were. I mean, didn't Higuchi say he was saddened by Pacific Rim's entirely CGI world?

... and the ironic thing is that Pacific Rim actually blended in miniature work into that CGI world (Gipsy Danger's fist going through the office building being a good example)!

Eh, I didn't want to post something that's still just a rumor here, but kaijubait (of Monster Attack Team) has claimed on another board (Gallifrey Base) that an inside source has told him that this is a case of Toho being Toho, and the no miniatures is a result of necessity with their limited resources, which is straining production.

Hope it's not the case! As of now it's just a rumor! Good vibes, everyone! PacRim2 confirmation has me in a good mood!

I don't know what I will do with myself if these rumors turn out to be true. Probably seek solace at the bottom of a bottle of gin for starters. And cry. A lot.

If everything ends up being 100% CGI with zero props....yeah, that would be a shock. And I can't imagine it looking very good, either. Bob may indeed have sources inside that have said this, but I'm cautiously optimistic that we will at least have a blend of effects for the film. Attack on Titan had decent looking effects IMO (tho, I've only seen the first one so far). The prop for the Colossal Titan was AWESOME and I was hoping that the Godzilla prop would be just as imposing in this movie.

I wonder if Toho had originally planned to allow Anno and Higuchi to use an Attack on Titan-syle blend of effects, but changed direction after those movies failed to perform at the box office.

^But those statements were made at the inception of the projects, and this rumor is that supposedly they've had to scale back on their ambitions because of lack of money.

I don't know how I feel about it. I am kind of curious to see what they can do with CGI as well. Yes, we have the Hollywood Godzilla, but that's Hollywood. The recent Ultraman and Gamera trailers were very impressive even though they were CG, they were very much Japanese. I also doubt it'll be 100% CGI. Even if the puppet didn't work, I'm sure there are shots that needs to be done with suit anyway. Maybe they're using CGI for the parts that were supposed to be filmed with the puppet? I mean, unless they really effed up the suits too, they're probably already built and ready to be used for the movie. Would be a waste of money to dump them. Unless they did screw it up big time. I think a smart mixture of miniatures and live action could work better. Only the building the monster will smash is miniature, while the surroundings are real build composited into the shot. I found a lot of the millennium sets way too... set like. It never felt real no matter how detailed they were.

I was hoping techniques besides CGI and suits being explored in this new movie, but we'll see.

I hate to keep being a downer on this movie but it seems like we can't get an update without my excitement being taken down a peg.
New Godzilla! YAY!
Done by a director whose previous work (that I've seen) doesn't thrill me...
...and an assistant director whose previous work REALLY doesn't thrill me...
...and Toho's typical short production time and limited budget...
...with the intended tone being a minefield that only requires a slight misstep to wind up hokey instead of scary...
...with a melty zombie Godzilla...
...with a design that looks like my butt 80 years from now...
...with crappy Toho CGI...

...what's next?

I'll grant there are some things to be excited about (Higuchi IS very good with effects, and we don't KNOW that the effects will be crappy CGI, and this WAS in pre-production far longer than most Godzilla movies), but for me, the bad is starting to outweigh the good, and I feel like I'm starting to hope against hope that it's actually any good, and not just a hot mess.

I was waiting for Jelly to comment. Just because of his hypothetical warning he made about the movie and trying to out do the American version. Granted with Higuchi working on it I assumed he would bring his own thing to the table without trying to surpass VFX from American productions. I guess time will tell if we were wrong.

Also we are going to have to agree to disagree on the design because for some reason it clicks with me. (only judging from that one picture). But I don't really want to get into that.

What is really bothering me lately is how people "in the know" don't give us much to go on. I have asked one of them "what does your contact think of the production, do they think it is going good?" Nothing. Not a peep from him.

Then we have Ed, who drops quite a bomb on us saying he has learned the production has gone exclusively CG. No elaborating on the comment, just drops it and we get stirred into a frenzy about it. Did he mean only the miniatures have gone CG but Godzilla might still be practical? You just leave us hanging with that? I mean, I would like to know if things have gone to hell so I can completely shut off my excitement for the project but I can't with my head stuck in rumor hell cause I don't know what to think.

Until actual footage/promotional material starts getting released, I'm not going to get myself worked up. Worse case scenario, its a terrible movie and I have the Legendary films to look forward to. Best case scenario, its an awesome film and I still have the Legendary films to look forward to. I like the fact that this film is taking a different direction from the Millennium films but there is definitely a different vibe from this production than other Godzilla films and I'm not sure what to make of it. Other than a poster and some leaked photos, everything is shrouded in shadows where as GxMG, Tokyo SOS, GFW, and the other films seemed to dump off information by the truckload.

Of course, all of this is dealing with the effects side of things. What if we end up with an interesting story and good characters and limited effects work? That wouldn't be the worst thing.
