A monocle would complete that image.

I'm aware. But a monocle would still complete it. And make it it's own.

I'm just itching to see this thing move. You can't judge a puppet as it hangs there 'dead.'

SMELLS LIKE DOODY!

I'm bored and want to discuss things...

This thread on reddit...

https://www.reddit.com/r/GODZILLA/comme ... m_of_toho/

I have no problem people disliking the design but some of the comments in here seem pure speculation and they are basing this off of the design/Attack on Titan/nothing.

Like comments about this being a cash in on G'14... when Toho decided to make this movie in 2013 before G'14 ever came out seems kind of a stretch. Toho trying to beat G'14 seems more like marketing/friendly competition. It just seems like people going off the handle? Or am I missing something?

I've seen the same mentality here prior to the 2014 film even here, but it really ratcheted up after 2014 was released and was way better than the 1998 movie. The Millennium series was seen by a LOT of people as being extremely boring and too vanilla. Posters thought that Toho didn't deserve to make Godzilla films given how rushed at derivative the series had become. I am not going to drop names, but I remember getting into it with people on this forum who thought Toho shouldn't touch Godzilla for another 10-20 years from 2013. I firmly believe that a lot of posters (mostly on reddit) have decided that Legendary is the rightful creator of Godzilla movies, and anything Toho is going to do is a cheap knock-off of the real thing. Toho absolutely cannot compete with Legendary on the effects or polish of a Hollywood production. Japanese films are also more steeped in tradition (Tokusatsu especially) and will have a different look and feel than what Legendary created. Unfortunately this difference is causing people to say this movie looks crappy, cheap, and rushed. However, I think Toho (and by extension the Japanese public) are more willing to address the character of Godzilla in an honest way. I don't want to get into it here, but I think it's safe to say that Godzilla 2014's nuclear elements were significantly downplayed, and his heroic presence in the film was dishonest to to the marketing of that movie.

I think this issue is especially a problem with younger posters, who saw Godzilla 2014 as a legitimization of their favorite hobby and movie series. Godzilla 2014 was a movie that they can point to and say, "see, I told you that Godzilla was cool!" Godzilla Resurgence is NOT going to be that movie, and because of that, it sucks.

No, he is speculating. I have seen the conversation and what he is saying isn't based on anything tangible.

At this point in the old days they'd just now have started making the damn movie.

We've been in post for, what? Month and a half?

I absolutely bashed Toho post Final Wars and was very suspect of them trying to reboot this after G'14. I got frustrated with them and never thought they would do the right thing. We got Kaneko back in 2001 which was a smart thing to do on their part and then they ignored him for whatever reason even after he said he would do another one if they asked. I would also b*tch constantly that they should acquire Higuchi to do the SFX for a Godzilla movie. Welp, they shut me up pretty hard when they decided hire him. So I am cautiously swinging the other way in their favor. Even though Attack on Titan is seen as a gigantic failure I thought it was pretty ambitious of them to attempt it and ended up enjoying all the Titan parts of the movie. Liked it enough to want to buy part 1 and 2 on BluRay whenever it comes out.

Also to put the cherry on the top they hired Anno to write/direct. While that is a big question mark on this whole thing I am really hoping this movie is the anti-hollywood movie and Anno could definitely bring that to the table. Not a clean and tidy hero action movie but a movie where this is no winner and only losers. I'm just hoping this is Godzilla meets Warrior God Appears in Tokyo meets Evangelion. I liked G'14 but to be honest G'16 only has to do one thing to win me over and that is make Godzilla the focus of the movie. Shouldn't be that hard to do.

But hey, we have no idea if things are going smoothly behind the scenes so right now this is all wishful thinking on my part.

I too was VERY vocal about not wanting another Toho Godzilla movie if they were gonna half-ass it like they did the Millennium films. And I said that as someone who ENJOYS the majority of the Millennium films. At the end of the day though, their reason for existing is pretty shallow, and just a knee-jerk reaction to the hatred of the 98 film and clamoring for "the real Godzilla" from fans.

I've been saying almost since the day I saw the 90s Gamera films that it's a shame that Godzilla has been surpassed by a Godzilla knockoff since the end of the Showa era, and Toho should be embarrassed that they are no longer the best at making kaiju movies, and need to deeply re-evaluate their approach to the genre.

It SEEMS like they have. Now, very little about this project specifically EXCITES me: I don't like the design, I haven't been impressed with Anno's other works that I've seen, it's still a fairly short production schedule, and it really does smack of cashing in on the newfound popularity of Godzilla in the wake of the 2014 film (to me, you can throw away their planning beginning before the release of the 2014 film, they didn't start planning it until that movie was shooting, and they didn't start shooting it until that movie was released; had the 2014 film flopped, I feel they would have just written this off since they hadn't started filming it yet), HOWEVER, it seems like Toho took a step back and said, "If we ARE going to make a Godzilla movie, we can't just phone it in, and we can't get a director and then interfere with him every step of the way." Whether or not I wind up LIKING this movie, I feel like Toho has given it the old college try...something I don't think they've legitimately done since the 80s.

While I'm not too overly excited about this movie, I am looking forward to it. I was actually hoping that Toho would take a break from making any Godzilla movies until Legendary was done and over with with their movie series, whenever that may be...if ever. But on the other hand, I'm all for Toho doing animated projects, whether it be films or TV series, heck even manga comics would've been great.

This movie has me interested, but like Jelly said, nothing about this movie has excited me so far. It looks interesting, and it seems to me that Toho is trying to make an effort in doing something different and special, which is great.

What I am really really crazy excited for is Godzilla 2 and Godzilla Vs Kong!
