I dunno. I saw Phantom Menace when I was 10 years old. I saw the original trilogy when the special editions came out. So, for me, there was a 2 year wait for Phantom Menace, and I only really found out about it in late 98'. Now, the movie is still there, with all of its terrible flaws, but at the same time I don't know that my hype was that big. Hell, I missed Return of the Jedi in theaters so I had to save up change to buy a VHS of it and I was wayyyy more hyped for that than Phantom Menace. To me, Menace was another Star Wars film and in my short life we had 3 and we were getting 3 more. I only bring this up because in my conversations with people local to me the hype seems to intensify the hatred for any given prequel film.
At the same time, I don't really mind watching the prequels or pretend they don't exist. I mean, I watch vs. Mothra and X Megaguirus on occasion as well. It's a film series with ups and down.
I'd say my hype for The Force Awakens is a bit higher. I mean, do I believe it's going to be a great movie? Nope. I mean, it could be a lot of fun...but it could also be Star Trek Into Darkness. I'm still incredibly excited to see it this December.
