And the movie only goes up to episode 8 of the anime. I doubt it's going to get to this supposedly important and good stuff in Part 2, and considering it's not exactly hitting at the box office, it seems unlikely that movies will be made to go on further.

And yeah, I definitely forgot about yoir belief that just because Peter Parker was drawn as white 50+ years ago when nobody would make a black hero, he this MUST be white...despite the actual character of Peter Parker having no racial characteristics.

So my Alamo is going to be showing the first movie on Sept 30 and Oct 5th, and the second movie on Oct 20th and 22nd. However, they don't say if it is subbed or dubbed. Hopefully subbed.

G'16 is our last hope to have practical effects live on since this movie is such a dud. I'll be shocked if if the sequel makes any money at all.

The comments about the effects kinda hurt, and it's even a discussion I was having the other day with a bunch of people.

For some reason, American audiences are conditioned to swallow CGI and not practical effects. I don't get it, but everyone always says it's "better" because it looks more "realistic." I call shenanigans. I've NEVER looked at a CGI effects and said, "Holy damn. That looks so REAL. It's like they found an actual [whatever that is] and filmed it. I'm BLOWN AWAY!" Now, that doesn't mean I hate CGI or think practical effects are "better" or look more "realistic," but I think you just have to judge each effect unto itself.

Personally, I think the CGI in both Godzilla 2014 and Pacific Rim is amazing. The composite effects are great, things move with a sense of weight to them, and they are great examples of just good solid effects in general.
The CGI in Hobbit and Jurassic World on the other hand...definite parts that were extremely underwhelming. Some of the early shots of raptors in Jurassic World were shoddy, as were things like the CGI gate and stuff like that. Hobbit has some awful compositing, and the whargs (are they wargs? I dunno...the wolf-hyena things) float rather than actually appear to be running across the ground.
NONE of the things I talked about above looked realistic. Not a single thing. But I have NO complaints about two of them, while the other two, I wonder what they actually spent their hundreds of millions of dollars on, because it wasn't those particular effects at all.

Same with practical kaiju effects. I never (well, except maybe when I was y'know like 4 years old and watching Godzilla movies) thought a Godzilla effect was REALISTIC...but the 90s Heisei movies have a sense of laziness, bulkiness, and general ineffectivity, while the better Showa films show what can be done with suitmation done right. Again, NONE of it is realistic, but it's not about REALISM, it's about getting lost in the movie and enjoying it for what it is.

When a movie is good and the effects are good, it's easy to just get swept up, no matter the TYPE of effect being used....
...or rather, it SHOULD be.

Unfortunately, I (and probably everyone here, and a bunch of people I know) are in the minority. Studios disagree (execs are constantly pushing for CGI in place of practical effects, and have even been known to outright replace shots of practical things with CGI), and so do audiences (as shown by people lapping up even shoddy CGI and claiming it superior to practical stuff).

It sucks.



ALL of that said, I wonder if perhaps this particular movie/series is just getting backlash because the movie itself isn't very good, a lot of people have already seen it, and they're just picking on it in general.

Saw this yesterday and thought the effects were, for the most part, fantastic. There's some really great stuff in this film. Unfortunately, most of it is buried underneath incompetent direction, and even when the direction is adequate, we're left to suffer through script issues. The deviations from the anime do hurt it, but I'm not going to dwell on them. The deviations from sensible storytelling hurt more. I'd rank it down there with Gunhed and Godzilla: Final Wars, but much prettier than either of those. I will be watching the hell out of this trainwreck on Blu-ray.

I've read that the second movie is even worse than the first because a quarter of it is spent on flashbacks to the first movie. WTF?

I believe Kotaku said it was a 10 minute flashback. That is still 8 minutes too long but whatever.

My opinion of this film softened considerably on second viewing. I'm upgrading my rating from 2/5 to 2.5/5, which, objectively for me, puts it at around the same level as Godzilla 1984 and Godzilla vs. Biollante, which are the last two good Japanese Godzilla films, in my mind.

I feel like I'm being suckered back into seeing part 2.

I mean, if it condenses the first bit of mediocrity to 10 minutes, and then is 71 minutes of War of the Gargantuas...maybe I'll like it. (I used this same type of rationale for checking out part 1, "A lot of people who love the source material hate it. I hate the source material...maybe I'll love it." and it didn't work out for me).

I like the Manga, but never watched more than the first ep of the anime. The black and white of the manga seems creepier. Although, with the movie, it's really just about watching for the toku stuff.
