They definitely squandered the potential of Mickey Rourke. I like Sam Rockwell though so that's a big plus in Iron Man 2's favor.

I understand that Iron Man 2 is kind of a mess, but I'm wayyy more interested in what's happening there than I am in Iron Man. I like the stuff with Tony's dad, Rourke doesn't get to do all that much but I think Hammer works out really well. I guess I just like the ideas at play here even if they don't gel all that well compared to Iron Man. On the other hand I think Iron Man 3 is probably put together much better than this but I loathe that film.

I finally watched Rocky (1976) all the way through. I don't really, get the love for this film, but I guess I can say that I've watched it now.
I see what I think it's trying to do, but the whole thing comes off as though it feels it's far more important than it ever becomes. *shrug*

The Valley of Gwangi

Man, Gwangi is such a great Harryhausen character. That's the secret, isn't it? Once Harryhausen came into his own he didn't make straight sci-fi or monster films, instead, he made adventure films where monsters were main characters.

This is actually one of those movies I really like but also wouldn't mind seeing remade. While Gwangi and his ilk are exceptional I felt like the human story was a rewrite or two away from working. How are we supposed to feel about Carlos? About Richard Carlson's character suddenly becoming Carl Denham? There's a bit of inconsistency running through all the characterization. I think there might be an even better cowboys vs. dinosaur film out there, waiting to be made. Get Laika to do the stop motion dinosaurs this time!

Captain America - A flawed, but fantastic origin movie for Captain America. I've never been a big fan of the character, but this movie made me really like him and the casting was top notch. Not only was Chris Evans a great Steve, but my god, Hugo Weaving was born to play Red Skull. He was just flat out amazing and I hope we do see him again in an upcoming movie. Overall, I give it a 7/10 stars.

Something Funny Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer - Okay, this really isn't a movie, but I never noticed this before in the extras. It was awesome. Hands down 10/10 stars.

I hope they re-cast Hugo Weaving. His dismissive and insulting comments about sci-fi, comic books, fantasy, etc movies and fans really rubbed me the wrong way considering this guy has no problems cashing those LOTR and Matrix checks.

He said something to the effect of, "I just went in and did it. I never read the script. I just have my lines, and I don’t know what they mean" and said he's not doing these kinds of movies anymore.
Apparently until Peter Jackson came calling with a fat sack of cash for Hobbit. He doesn't "want" to do comic/sci-fi/fantasy roles anymore, but he's okay taking the job and the money from someone who might actually be interested and give it their all.
That's really my take: if you don't WANT to do it, then don't do it.

The Time Machine (1960)

One of the most delightful science fiction adventure films ever made!

And it has Uncle Scrooge (aka Alan Young) in it!

Paddington was at a cheap show and I saw it. You guys. This movie is awesome. It's funny, it's adorable, it's charming, and it's not afraid to present real danger in the form of its villain. There are a lot of jokes for both kids AND adults and at 95 minutes, it's like the perfect length. No irritating or drawn-out plot fake-outs or anything, and solid pacing. Every family entertainment movie should be like this.

District 9 - Very good. A well-crafted allegory. It's hard not to feel bad for Wikus, even though he gets (more than) what he deserves. I was a bit bothered that the mockumentary feel vanished for long portions of the second and third acts, but I suppose it was necessary in order to tell the whole story.

Avengers - This was my third time watching it and I have to say it was far more enjoyable than I remembered. I loved it. There are some many great lines in it and the action is fantastic. The characters are fun and it is by far one of the best super hero team up movies ever, if not the best. I give it an 8/10.

The Night of the Hunter

Guys, if you haven't seen this movie you've gotta get on it! At a certain level it's a thriller or even a melodrama, but in execution it feels like fairy tale/horror movie. It's a beautiful, scary movie.

I got Night of the Hunter for my birthday last year and it was great. It combines the elements of Film Noir with those of horror perfectly.

Anyway, today I kick off the Marvel phase 2 movies, none of which I have watched since seeing them in the theater on their opening weekends.

Iron Man 3 - I hated this movie when it first came out. I hate what they did to Mandarin, not because of the twist, but because the movie fizzled out into redundancy of the first two movies. I still hate that aspect of the movie. That makes three movies in a row where the main villain was just some jealous spoiled baby. However, everything about the movie was so much better this time around. I highly enjoyed it a lot more than I had before. As such, I'm upping its score from my original 6 to a 7/10. It is still far from perfect, but it is an enjoyable movie in the long run.

Agent Carter One Shot - Again, not an actual movie, but it was quite enjoyable. I give it a 9/10.

Item 47 - Forgot about this yesterday, it is decent. Probably the weakest of the four one shots I have watched so far, but still interesting. I give ita 7/10.

Thor 2 - This one is about the same as it was when I first saw it. I like it a lot, but it is not as good as the first one. Malachi is a lackluster villain as he doesn't really do much and has little to no development. The fight at the end is great though and both Hemsworth and Portman have excellent chemistry together. Nevertheless, Loki is by far the highlight and I cannot wait for Ragnarok. I give this one a 7/10.

All Hail the King - Whoa, THANK YOU!! It was nice to see them remember the Ten Rings from the first Iron Man movie and that there is really a Mandarin. This was awesome and I hope we see more of this later. 10/10.

Watched the special edition of Star Wars last night. The enhanced ship effects are good, wish they used that technical wizardry to get rid of some of the matte boxes around the ships instead of adding random floating CGI bot that looks like it came from a 9th Doctor episode, or the extra 3 minutes of stupid cg monster walking around Mos Eisley. And that Jabba scene, uuuuhhhhhgggggg.

Tonight my girl friend has the original trilogy when they popped up on DVD that one time and we watched Empire Strikes Back. So awesome. I mean, it's Empire, what more is there to say. But I do like to think that when Vader shows up at Cloud City, before they torture Han, they sit down and have the most awkward lunch in the galaxy.
