Or you know, he's swinging his body weight through the bridge after trying to lift it up in the previous scene.

When flies are buzzing around me I usually just "shoo" them off instead of striking back. Maybe that's what Godzilla was doing

Or, when wasps are stinging you, you usually just leave. Especially since the wasps are helping you make a movie and would be upset if you killed them. This metaphor may be getting out of hand.

He's not swiping, he's swinging his body around! That gif is from a deliberately misleading trailer that wanted to make you THINK he was swiping at the tanks! Godzilla completely ignores the tanks! He literally just walks away from them! HE NEVER STRIKES BACK AT THEM AT ALL.

Look man. If you're so deep down the "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" rabbit hole that you've started moving your own goalposts further and further from your original point to avoid entertaining the idea that you COULD EVEN POSSIBLY be wrong, that's your business. And, as I said earlier, its ridiculously dishonest to claim that he "struck back" at them. He walked away from them, retreated from them, moved away from them. If Godzilla had walked through the section of bridge with the tanks on it, you would have a point. But he didn't. He moved AWAY from the tanks, and all of your fanciful imaginary violent motions can't change that.

He's not retreating, he's advancing in a different direction.

What I have an issue with is you claiming that Godzilla ambiguously flailing his arm somehow counts as "striking back" against the military. If some kid shoots a slingshot at me and I flail my arm about then walk away, how is that striking back? You've gone from claiming that he was striking back at them, to lashing out at them, to swiping at them but missing, to "making a violent motion," all while claiming that it was really your argument all along! You've claimed that Godzilla was advancing undeterred in the face of tank fire, when he in fact recoils from it and then moves away from them. And all the while you act like this constitutes "striking back." Whatever man. Believe what you want to believe. Just don't expect people to hop on the bullet train that is your rationalization.

Haha. You keep changing the meaning of the term "striking back" by narrowing it down to a micrometer and I'm the one making the semantics argument. That seems fair. And hey, if Godzilla recoiling and moving away from those tanks doesn't count as advancing or striking back at them by any sane definition, then I guess that's just semantics too. Your imaginary version of the movie where Godzilla strikes back at the military by deliberately avoiding them must have been a blast to see in theaters. ;)

It was an ill considered term and has been changed.

And, hey, if my arguments are ridiculous to you, at least the feeling is finally mutual.

There are plenty of destroyed jets and dead soldiers in this movie, courtesy of the MUTOs. I think the fact that the film doesn't take a 'Godzilla vs. the military' angle is more about making Godzilla the hero monster of the story, the same reason movies like Godzilla vs. Hedorah or Gigan didn't do it either. I can't imagine the DoD would have had a problem with Godzilla being the one to take down the jets rather than the MUTO unless the film was simultaneously depicting Godzilla as the hero, i.e. portraying the deaths of military service members as a positive thing in the story.

Actually, didn't the jet at the Honolulu airport crash because it hit Godzilla's dorsal fins? I can't remember if the MUTO played a part in that at all. Either way, that certainly wasn't Godzilla's intention any more than the tsunami he caused.

The helicopter never hit Godzilla's spines--it banked to avoid them, slammed into the MUTO, and then crashed in a fireball into the planes below. Anyway, yes, your point is correct: the MUTOs can kill soldiers because they are our designated bad guys (even then, MUTO vs military scenes are still used very sparingly, much like destruction scenes in general), and they die at the end of the movie. Having Godzilla the hero killing truckloads of soldiers deliberately and on-screen would be much more problematic.

Not sure what was done before this, but work on the script started in 2011 with Callaham's story treatment. There was probably a lot of planning and stuff that went into it beforehand, but that's mostly off the record. Filming started in early 2013 and wrapped up by that Summer.
