It's been a good month now. We've digested it and all.

SO THEN

What were your favorite looking scenes in the movie? For me it has to be the POV shot of Godzilla form the bus driver's view. Right when that Abrams was firing away to no end at Godzilla. Great sense of scale there.

My favorite scene from the film was when Ford and Godzilla share eye contact.

Really get the sense that Godzilla's not just some big dumb monster.

Hm...I had a lot of scenes I loved, it's kind of hard to pick just one. ^_^

Of the human scenes, I think my two favorites were Joe's speech in the interrogation room and Serizawa showing the watch to Stenz.

Of the monster scenes, Godzilla's big reveal (from the tidal wave to the scene in the apartment), the two MUTOs finally meeting, and the female MUTO's reaction to the explosion in the nest were my favorites.

Hmmmm... favorite scenes. Honestly, there's so many Godzilla-related ones I'd just list too much, so I'll mention my two favorite non-Godzilla scenes:

-The bridge scene with Ford, the train, and the Muto. If not for the final battle it'd be my favorite part of the movie.
-The male and female Mutos meet for the first time and 'kiss'

My favorite human scene is definitely Joe's speech. I literally get emotional when he screams "MY WIFE DIED HERE!" So much power, so much emotion, such a good scene.

My favorite scene with Godzilla is when he approaches the shore and Serizawa sees him through his binoculars. I love the music que as you see the spines. At that moment, I'm like YES!!

I know I listed a kaiju scene, but I have to mention the MUTO. My favorite scene with the MUTO is when the fighter jets are about to attack the male in the jungle and the male uses the EMP. That whole moment was jaw dropping for me.

All in all, I have to say those were some tough picks as I had too many favorite scenes in there.

The scene I'm usually replaying mentally is the HALO drop. With what I'm about to say next, don't get me wrong - I think Godzilla is a very good movie - but that sequence almost feels too good for it. It's visual poetry, like something you'd see in an adaptation of Paradise Lost.* Everything about it is dead-on. Aside from that, I also liked the train bridge sequence a lot. The escape of the MUTO from the pit is pretty stellar, with it looming over Ford and stomping on people. And, of course, any shot with Godzilla in it gets high marks from me.

*In fact, I'm just reading that Legendary cancelled an adaptation of that two years ago. Maybe if they revive it and put Edwards on it, they'll cease to have budget concerns. :P

Is there early concept art with Godzilla and Anguirus at Alcatraz?

My favorite scene is the whole airport sequence. Specifically, when the crewman hides from the MUTO under a plane and water rushes in from the other side. You just knew what was coming at that point.

Also, the big reveal a minute later. When his foot comes down with such force and everyone in the airport stopped screaming..

Lastly, as the music goes silent for Godzilla's first roar.. I love the animation/setup of the new roar. That the scream is the actual roar and the bellow that comes after it is him breathing in some kind of vacuum pressure.

My favorite scene is definitely the "stopped watch" conversation between Serizawa and Stenz. It's one of the only human scenes that feels like it's actually part of the Godzilla franchise.

I think the HALO jump is borderline iconic. Potentially right up there with the heist in "TDK" as a great, original summer movie moment.

The title sequence was pretty impressive. Even more so the idea that the atomic bomb tests were not tests at all, but an attempt to kill Godzilla. I love when a movie's mythology intersects with history and that did so quite deftly.

The way Godzilla killed the female MUTO is top 5 best monster kill scenes.

And of course, Godzilla's Hawaii entrance. From spines in the water, to reveal at the airport.

Disappointments -

Lack of the classic Godzilla March. I think that could've been incorporated pretty easily at the end when Godzilla rises from the ashes.

Not so much a disappointment, but his atomic ray seemed more like the weaker Showa variety than the super-destructive GMK variety or horribly painful Heisei version. I know this is getting super nerdy but I would've liked it had the ray been stronger.

I'm actually okay with them not using the Godzilla March for several reasons.

First, I don't think it would fit the film Something akin to a score like Michiru Oshima, or Biollante or 84 are much more Western sounding and would probably fit the bill better. Second, I think The Godzilla March is an incredibly lazy reworking of the Self Defense Forces March from 1954 and the Battle In Outer Space march. Third, the Godzilla terror theme from the 60s Showa films is much more intimidating.

Favorite scene.... honestly its hard to say.. so many visually striking sequences.

Cranston is masterful...
everything that occurs in Hawaii is amazing, godzillas arrival and reveal is thrilling.
The bridge crossing etc etc... it just goes on and on..

the framing of simple destruction scenes in this movie are amazing.. even after repeat viewing I havent fully digested everything enough to take certain aspects for granted... Just watching Cranston and ATJ sneak back in to their old home and their time in the contaminated area....great stuff all around.

You know bringing this topic up of favorite scenes brought something to mind. I love so many great scenes from the film, but only really seem to like but not love the whole thing as a cohesive whole. When taken individually out of the context of the rest of the film my favorite easily are Godzilla's Golden Gate arrival, the train trestle, the airport attack, and then, of course, the final fight at the end (especially when Godzilla uses his atomic breath). Its just seems like most of the issues stems from the "glue" that happens between all those big set-pieces.

On a side-note, I'm getting to see it for a third time at the drive-in tonight with X-men DOFP. I'm excited. :-)

One cool thing I noticed today:

On the Golden Gate scene, it begins with tons of birds fleeing, seemingly away from Godzilla.
The movie ends with Godzilla leaving the city being surrounded by a bunch of birds, almost looking like an aura.

I just thought it was cool that they mirrored the humans in their thoughts on Godzilla.

Just got back from my third screening. We sat really close to the screen, and now I have a kaiju-induced headache.

... which is the best kind of headache.

Ok, I know I'm so late to bring this up.. but does anyone else get that 1984 vibe when they do that tilt up shot from Godzilla's feet on up?

I just watched this movie again for the second time today. My thoughts are generally the same, a few things that I saw though:

1. I completely understand where people feel that Aaron-Taylor Johnson was "wooden". There are moments where he tries to show a lot of emotion, but I wasn't feeling it. The first time around I didn't mind it, this time... Eh. I felt the same about the human characters as a whole, definitely not this film's strong point. I even forgot that Bryan Cranston was in this movie towards the end.

2. Godzilla as the nice guy; not so much. First time around I thought he came off as a Gamera type monster where he was intentionally trying to save people, but in my second viewing I feel like he's more like "you're not worth my attention" type attitude. At the bridge scene, I thought it looked kind of like he stumbled a bit, and grabbed the fence as a way to hold himself up rather than to save everyone.

3. I never noticed the whole "Ford's Mothra" on the cocoon when they go back into the house.

4. I loved the music before, I love it even MORE!!! I have a list of music to pump me up when I go on my daily 6 mile run, and now that Opening Credits track is on my list. Anytime that you have epic music and Godzilla shrugging off nuclear bombs, it's awesome!!!

5. Initially, I felt that there wasn't enough Godzilla. While I think that more Godzilla doesn't hurt, I feel that the presence and appearance of the Mutos early on really give us some kaiju to be preoccupied with before the big G shows up 5 minutes later.

I was also surprised to find that there was still a decent amount of people in the theater after a month. I love this movie.

I really enjoy the soundtrack as well.. though I really dislike the music cue that plays when Goji kills the last Mutoh, it steals the moment from Godzilla instead of enhancing it..

Regardless I cant wait to see footage of this film mixed with the original goji march and the goji march from the millenium series.
