Anyone else played Smash 3? It's surprisingly fun, though it can be frustrating at times. For a free game it's not bad...and/or I'm easily amused.

Hahahhaha yeah, the timed stages are pretty ridiculous and I'm not about to waste money on upgrades.

International numbers come out today. Hopefully it holds better with those numbers... If not, Tull may have wished to keep his mouth shut about G2 and G3.

I think folks are way over-fretting about GODZILLA's box office take. It was going up against one of the most well-known comic-based movie franchises there is this weekend. Also, the base for Godzilla has a LOT of the comic/nerd fans who will be catching X-Men opening weekend. Wait until next weekend and then see what's up. Now if there had been nothing but Rio 2 or somesuch and Godzilla still dropped 77% then MAYBE the writing would be on the wall, so to speak, but give the film a chance! Let's see what late Tuesday night brings for holiday wekend BO totals and, again, what the numbers pull AFTER next weekend, to more accurately predict whether or not this film has some staying power. And really it's all moot anyhow until the Asian box office opens, closes and all the first-run money worldwide can be tallied up. Then we can all cry and blubber if the powers that be torpedo any sequel plans.

Speaking of which... my hope is that LP uses at least 2 of the other Toho monsters they licensed (Rodan and Angilas are my prefs) and build up slowly, rather than panic and shoot their wad all at once. I can dig a tech weapon from the Toho universe, too, but not right away. Maybe indicate MONARCH and the military are close to completing a powerful new weapon and then prominently feature it in the 3rd film (MASERs) ...and unleash King Ghidorah and Mothra in that film, too, ala DAM. I'm fairly certain that even if Edwards is stubborn enough that he doesn't take it to heart, LP's Thomas Tull will see the overall consensus of critics, and both casual & hardcore fans and NOT hide the monsters so much in future films but rather embrace the madness - at least to a point. An initial tease of each new kaiju is fine and dandy, but don't keep doing that bait & switch crap through the whole film. Been there, done that. Just please don't stoop to the shaky cam/Michael Bay ADD-editing thing. Keep the same visual style. The cinematography and monster battle composition were certainly two of this film's strongest points.

In my mind it basically it boils down to 2 things: better (MUCH BETTER) writing, and show the monsters more.

4 day Holliday take will be around 38 million. That's a steep drop. We'll see what kind of drops it has next week.. It needs to stay around 40% to stabilize.

Box office mojo has the 3 day estimates up:

XMEN looks like it may not have a very high domestic run. I'm curious to see how far it drops next weekend.

Godzilla is still on pace to hit 40 million this weekend (which was the expected number including Monday). Box office mojo is reporting it should be sitting just under 150 million after today. It's also at 325 million worldwide and we still haven't seen China or Japan. If memory seves, Pacific Rim made a healthy 100 million in China. Godzilla should do the same.

315 globally right now.... Everywhere I read, this film has dropped hard. Made just over 30m this weekend overseas. Will be lucky to hit 400 ww before Japan and china. This movie in one week has had its legs cut off. I'm not too sure on a sequel now.

For some reason, I always thought PR did that good in China because a lot of it took place there. I'll tell you what, I'm interested in what Tull has to say now.

I'm gonna say 25m in Japan and 60m in China. Maybe 380 before then... So my guess is 465WW gross. If WB and LP consider this a success, then fine.

Its drops won't be as kind as ASM2 though. It will most likely barely hit 200m here in the states. Like I said, I'm hoping the drops stabalize next week... But I'm not too sure.

Cookson, relax my friend. This movie is making money. As I stated before, I think the biggest fear I had was that it would do less than the total domestic gross of GINO. That would have probably put the final nail in the coffin for Godzilla anywhere. And some were actually predicting (based on the trajectory of "Pacific Rim") that it would bomb outright. The "John Carter" of 2014.

The money may not be as big as some where hoping and detractors of this film will spin in all sorts of negative ways, but the movie is a success.
