I'm not giving ASM2 or X-men: Time Travel Should Fix This until they hit the cheap theaters. This summer my ticket money belongs to Godzilla. Unless I hear from trusted sources that either on of them is amazingly astounding. But it already sounds like Spidey doesn't fit that bill.

Saw this movie today. Before I start, as full disclosure, I quite liked the first ASM. I enjoy Garfield as Peter Parker, especially with his wisecracking as it resembles more the Spider-Man I grew up with from the old animated series. I also liked Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and thought it handled Peter's origin even better than Raimi's original.

ALL of that said, this movie (ASM2) is a freaking trainwreck. The worst part is there are flashes of greatness here and there. Garfield and Stone are great and every scene they have is wonderful. I love Sally Field as Aunt May. Even some of the action scenes are compelling. But, its all ruined by the utter mess of a plot. It feels like they took 2 good ideas for a film (Electro's plot and Harry Osborn's plot) and shoved them together along with super obvious sequel baiting. Add to this the uninteresting subplot about Peter chasing the memory of his Dad and the whole film feels bloated and purposeless. It really does feel like changing channels over and over. There's no flow and the various plot threads don't work together at all.

Oh and I won't spoil anything, but the big dramatic thing that happens in the last 10 minutes? Feels totally unearned and is handled really poorly in my opinion. I wasn't opposed to it happening, but it belonged in a much better movie with a much better build up, not tacked on to this pile of feces.

All in all I feel bad for Garfield and Stone as they really are the best part of this, but I really hope this movie fails spectacularly. I would give ANYTHING for Sony to sell the rights back to Marvel because the idea of more Spidey movies like this makes me nauseous.

It's weird. Like...I think objectively it's the worst Spider-Man movie

BUT I liked it more than 3 or ASM. Not for any good reason, I just had more fun. It's weird. The acting is on point (mostly) in the May/Peter/Gwen stuff
the rest is just...weird.
The scenes in Ravencroft sort of felt like they belonged in a Schumacher Batman movie. I dunno. It's a weird film, and it doesn't flow that well as a film. It feels a lot like we just got a volume of a Spider-Man show. And the ending is SUPER UNEARNED. I FELT NOTHING. :/

And yeah, wise cracking Spidey is the one thing this version of Spidey bests the Raimi version at no contest.

The Average Spider-Man 2 - What do you get when you take an unnecessary reboot and mix it with cramming three movie plots into one? The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is what. The movie is not terrible by any means, but it isn't very good either. Emma Stone was great as Gwen, but the highlight of the movie is everything dealing Electro. In fact, if the movie revolved solely around Electro, it would have been an excellent movie. The fight scenes with Electro were awesome. The musical theme used for him was incredible. The one liners and jokes Spider-Man made were also great. Unfortunately, Garfield's Peter in this movie comes off more annoying than anything else. In fact, his version of Peter absolutely sucked in this one. The actor who played Harry Osborn was down right awful here. The man just came off as a spoiled brat with daddy issues than a tragic character as he had absolutely no development whatsoever. Not to mention what happens to the character later feels like it belonged in the third movie. There are other issues I have with the movie that I will withhold due to spoilers that royally pissed me off. Finally, there are way too many characters crammed into this thing. Sony should have just done a Spider-Ma TV series instead, as this is what this thing feels like, and is where the series ultimately fails. They are sacrificing quality in the movie just so it can support the sequels, and that is one of the biggest problems with movies as a whole these days. STOP RELYING ON SEQUELS TO TELL YOU ****ING STORY!!! This one is at least better than Spider-Man 3, but that may not mean much. I give the movie an average 6/10 stars.

Oh yeah, there is no reason to stay through the credits. There is nothing after and the only thing during the credits is AN X-MEN TRAILER!! WTF is an X-Men trailer doing there???!!!

SPOILERS

Killing Gwen was absolute bullshit!!!!!!! If they were going to kill her, they should have waited until at least the third movie. And that is when Green Goblin should have come in (not to mention his design was ****ing ugly!!!!). Of course, there was NO reason to kill her!!!

So I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. There's a lot going on but it manages to handle itself better than the similarly bloated Spider-Man 3, and I found it far more satisfying than the 2012 reboot that brought us here. So I thought it was a good, if noticeably imperfect, sequel. The main problem is how they're trying to set other characters and stories up at the cost of the story they're supposed to tell in this movie. The weak link to me is Electro. A lot of what that character does before and after his transformation comes across as very cartoony... and then you have Harry Osborn (arguably the better of the two main villains) which is very serious, bringing up Peter's past, and deserves to be explored deeper.

Honestly, watching the movie I wanted to see Rhino and the real Green Goblin as the villains. Paul Giamatti and Chris Cooper are probably the best actors in the movie and they have the least amount of screen-time. I felt the same way about Toby Jones in Captain America: TWS.

But I still liked the movie. I hope the inevitable 3rd installment is as much an improvement as the sequel here was to the 2012 film.

One of the things that's been bugging me every time I see a trailer is the producers setting things up so that Oscorp is the be all end all of super abilities in the ASM world. The last trailer I saw showed some sort of tech/experiment gallery that had Doc Ock's arms AND the Vulture's wings and presumably the Rhino armor is also Oscorp tech (not to mention Spider-Man's resulting from Oscorp research).

Since the trailers have already established the Green Goblin being in the movie, I'll add that I'm rather disappointed that the folks at Sony rushed to bring the Green Goblin into the movies. I had an idea years ago (probably around the time of Spider-Man 2) that instead of bringing GG (or GG2) into the movies quickly they could start off with the Hobgoblin instead for the villain. However this would be a big secret for the public at large, the promotion for the movie would feature the Hobgoblin in silhouette, shots in trailers would have the villain in shadow (perhaps even shoot some short scenes expressly for the trailers), and perhaps even bandy about the term goblin in some of the advertising.

All the subterfuge of course is encourage some Olympic class conclusion jumping and get people to assume that the villain is the Green Goblin and so that audiences will be surprised when the Hobgoblin is revealed on screen. The surprise would probably only last opening night of course, though I suppose a notice to "please keep the surprise reveal a secret" could be included right before the credits and hope for the best that some jerk[s] don't ruin the surprise for anyone that didn't see the movie on opening night.

Holy cow, this movie is a mess, and easily the worst Spider-Man film to date. Totally lopsided, way too much going on, and awful new origins for the characters.

The stuff that worked:

-Andrew Garfield- His Peter still isn't "my" Peter Parker, but he's much less douchey in this. And his Spider-Man is spot on in this one (again, much less douchey).

-Emma Stone- This poor girl carries a lot of this crappy movie on her shoulders due to her chemistry with Garfield. However, she simply isn't given much to do.

-Dane Dehaan- I hate the new Green Goblin origin, but he turned in a solid and fun performance as Harry.

-Sally Field- Obviously. Just like the first movie, she doesn't have anything to do, but she's still great. And her relationship with Peter is fantastic.

-Peter being haunted by Capt. Stacey's death was a nice move and one that makes the character betrayal at the end of the previous film much more palatable.

-The death of Gwen- I actually thought this was handled well. The only reason it feels unearned is because she has so little to do in the movie, but the way it happens and the fallout are all totally fine.

The stuff that sucked. Pretty much everything else, but I'll break it down:

-Electro. EVERYTHING about Electro is wrong in this movie, and wrong FOR this movie. Electro and every scene he's in feel like they came right out of a separate film. Not only that, they're super cheesy and stupid. Every scene with Electro and Jamie Foxx's performance... it was all VERY Shumacher-Batman to me. The worst thing is that Electro honestly could be taken out of this movie and the plot would largely be the same. He really had no business being in this thing to begin with. They should have just made a Green Goblin movie and stuck with that. To be honest, if they cut Electro completely and get rid of the Spidey DNA stuff and just made a Green Goblin movie, this COULD have been an alright film.

-Rhino- HOLY CRAP, Paul Giamatti is bad in this. He's hamming it up and clearly having fun, but man, someone needed to dial him down. Luckily he's barely in it. And oh yeah, his Rhino robot looks f*cking stupid, especially when its doing dumb boxing stances.

-Green Goblin- Nothing against Dehaan, but the new Goblin origin as a body-horror gone wrong not only doesn't work, but he looks like the love child of Beavis and David Bowie. Total fail.

-The new Spider-Man origin- Ok, here we go. THIS IS F*CKING BULLSH*T. That Peter's dad messed with his DNA and a spider's DNA and the spider-bite would only affect a Parker. Totally destroys the origin of Spider-Man and takes the wind out of what made the character's origin special to begin with. A giant f*ck you to Marc Webb, Avi Arad and Orci/Kurtzman for this. And the worst part is, this subplot/origin revamping adds NOTHING to the story in the film whatsoever. F*CK YOU, MOVIE. When they revealed this, it was like watching someone take a huge dump on my favorite Marvel character.

-The score- I don't know what it is about Spider-Man movies that make great composers turn in such mediocre work, but they got Hans Zimmer this time and he's totally phoning it in. His Electro theme is alright, but its just your standard Zimmer BRAAAAAHHMs and his Spider-Man theme seemed like a rehash of his Man of Steel theme.

It is kinda how I feel about the new Star Trek movies. The cast is spot on and the pieces are all in place, but the writing just isn't there.

Anyway, this movie sucks. Glad I saw it for free.

While I will agree it is far from Zimmer's best work, I disagree on the Electro theme. That theme was freaking badass.

The biggest problem with this movie is that it is three movies in one. There is an Electro movie in here. There is a Green Goblin movie. There is a Sinister Six movie. This movie should have been Electro and nothing but Electro. Harry's story and his becoming Goblin should have been the third movie along with the death of Gwen if they really had to do it. I still find it utter bullshit to kill her off. Finally, the Rhino stuff at the end should have been the beginning to the fourth movie, which starts off the Sinister Six Trilogy.

Oh yeah, and the design of Goblin made me miss Dafoe's costume from the first Raimi movie. Suddenly the mask's mouth does not look so bad anymore.

However, this movie is not even close to being as bad as Spider-Man 3. This movie gets a 6/10, that movie is a 4/10.

So I enjoyed this movie as long as a villain wasn't onscreen-- save for Harry Osborn before he singlehandedly rescued Electro. (Pretty good for a kid with no combat experience what-so-ever. Good thing that place was so heavily guarded, eh?)

I actually enjoyed it more than the last movie for stylistic and pacing reasons. It didn't look like Spider-Man was saving Gotham City this time. Stone and Garfield are the faint pulse of this movie that kept it from spiraling into complete trash, but it does so little to recover the over-stuffed schlock in this movie.

Max/Electro didn't work at any point in the movie. Garfield and Stone are able to bypass poor dialogue and make something genuine out of it, but Foxx immediately feels like a character that exists outside this film's universe. Webb and his writers were so busy trying to make Max out to be an introverted loser that they forgot to treat him like a human being themselves.

And as much as I love Dehaan the Goblin subplot really pushed the movie to its overstuffed limit. I don't see why they couldn't have simply saved Goblin for the next movie and had Electro....

I didn't dislike it as much as I thought I did. In fact there were plenty of things I thought were done better than the previous movie, but they tend to be minor improvements compared to the overall story. I'll say I enjoyed the movie in parts-- the parts that really connected on an emotional level were quite strong. The action, the villains, the pointless plot threads... They don't necessarily make it the worst superhero flick of all time, but this isn't the era in cinema to be a mediocre to sub-par superhero movie. It'll be lucky if it's a footnote.
