If it were called Iguanadon or something and cut the raptor sequences I'd like it a lot more, but the movie is pretty heavily reviled around here

I do like SOME things...mostly the build up to his initial appearance and the score. It's just...blech
I listened to the kaijucast commentary a few days ago, and they did harp a lot on the design, which
I don't really mind. I kind of dig it. The thing is...even with a better design or a more
acceptable design....it'd still be a garbage movie.

You see I think thats just the thing. You start liking it after a while then you get scared and go find people who hate it to make you feel comfortable. And by YOU i mean EVERYONE.

Up until the appearance of GINO, the movie is an okay, if lackluster reboot/re-imagining/remake of the original film. There's a bit too much terrible comedy, and a bit too much overly convenient, sloppy writing, but that'd all be VERY forgivable if the movie had become fun once the creature appeared.

Instead, GINO appears and the movie becomes MORE boring. And it has NOTHING to do with the design, and only slightly more to do with the ease with which GINO is dispatched, rather, it's the actual pacing, "character development", script, and sequences which suck all the life out of the film, and of course, out of me.

I'm not at all ashamed to say I could give the movie a pass if the final 90 minutes lived up at least to the first 30, but it becomes an unforgivable pile of garbage once the monster shows up.

^ Basically how I feel... I don't understand how the movie could drop so hard once Godzilla enters the city. That's when the movie should really get going after some semi-decent build-up. But instead he disappears again! And once you do get a good look at him, even if you're still into the movie with the new design, they replace him in favor of blatant Jurassic Park rejects. I just can't wrap my brain around it.

So... for the last few months I'd been considering rewatching GINO before next week as "therapy," or at least "rage-fuel" to make the sweet-payoff of the new Goji that much more satisfying. Afterall, it's been like 15 years since I last saw this piece of sh*t. But just watching this:


... was enough to tell me that such an undertaking would be 1) Mentally and physically self-destructive and 2) A waste of time. You could slap yourself in the balls for 5 minutes and get the same effect as watching this.

GODZILLA 2014, I'm ready.

God the compositing of the missiles' explosions is terrible. Also this creature can burrow through concrete and granite like its tissue paper but yet a few wires is enough to grind him to a halt... Also a little electrical cable to the gum hurt him? Showa goji ate million volt electrical towers for breakfast... The horror is coming back to me all over again.

What bothers me most about this movie is simply the fact that it is called Godzilla. I will never consider this movie a Godzilla movie nor the creature in it as Godzilla, or Zilla for that matter. GINO is acceptable for me.

BUT, as a mindless generic American monster movie, I don't consider it all that bad. If I turn off my brain for two hours and just watch it for what it is, then I actually enjoy it. To me, this movie is no different than made for DVD/BlueRay monster movies such as the Mega Shark movies, Sharknado, etc. The only difference is that GINO has a bigger budget.

I remember back in '98 when I saw this movie in theaters and remember hating it as Godzilla movie, but still enjoying it as a brainless popcorn movie. The monster itself isn't all that bad either, just not Godzilla. I know this will never ever happen, but I wish Toho would rename this movie to something else and take out all the references to Godzilla.

I think Gigersaurus would be a better name

I think the first 20 minutes are the best of the film, however it presents one of the biggest problems of the film. GINO arrives way too early and the film then spends 2 lackluster hours chasing a creature around who barely does any damage, leaving the military, who is way too inept, to do the honors of destroying New York.

There are some interesting set pieces, the sub battle is nice. I love David Arnold's score, even though his main theme is derivative of Bernard Herrmann's Cape Fear.

I feel like this film is closer to The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms. I also think Emmerich was ignorant when it came to Godzilla and frankly never should have been allowed to do the film. I do like the creature design, but not as Godzilla.
