I know i'm late on this but we watched the Super Bowl while we were on our cruise to Mexico and I loved every bit of it. I said all season long that i'd be surprised if Denver didn't win the Super Bowl, but then leading up to the game, I mentioned to some friends of mine that if there's one team that could give the Broncos fits, it was Seattle's defense. And man was I right. I then remembered that old saying in football. A good defense will beat a good offense every time. Every time! As Stephen A. Smith said the day after the game, the Broncos got PUNKED. Pure and simple. Congrats to Seattle, they deserve it.

Meh. Much as I loathe the Patriots, I didn't love the AFC Championship game. I loved both of their last-second losses to the Giants more.

You know, it's kinda like, around here in Houston, they feel the sting of The Comeback far more than the time they got swept by the White Sox in the World Series. A close loss stings the team you hate more than a blowout.

Dallas is finally dumping dead weight. Unfortunately they've made such a mess of their salary cap it doesn't matter.


Looks like the Patriots upgraded their secondary with Denver in mind.

I find Denver's moves STUPID if they don't win a Super Bowl. $56 million for TALIB??? No. $30 million for a declining Ware? No.

I do think Ware is an upgrade for them, I don't think Talib is...but it's a LOT of money to sink into a couple of guys. If they don't win a Super Bowl, they are sacrificing their ability to hold onto their young talent.
John Elway's being called a genius for what he's done in Denver, but honestly, if Manning hadn't healed so well from his neck surgeries, he'd look like fool.

New England's move to get Revis was solid. No risk on their part. Edelman's a good re-sign. I hate that they signed LaFell...not so much on their end, just that it suddenly makes LaFell less interesting to me. New England spreads the ball around too much.

I like what the Bills have done: added a pair of linebackers, a guard, a third running back, and a bunch of special teams guys. Given how awful their special teams were, I like that. They've not made a HUGE splash, but I'm still enjoying the huge splash they made with Mario, so I think they've got a plan and are doing things right.

Other than that, I don't have many thoughts. Denver's kinda been the most active, but I am not as in love with their moves as everyone else. I would like the Bills to pursue Owen Daniels.

Count me as a Cowboys fan who doesn't care they released Ware.

Yeah sure he compiled a ton of sacks but can anyone recall a game changing defensive play he ever made when a crucial game was on the line? For all the grief Romo gets, he's made plenty of possible game winning drives only to see the defense give up the win.

The season is almost upon us!

I'm currently starting to plan for my Fantasy Football draft, re-evaluating last year's draft, analyzing my hits and misses...My first three picks were all good, kinda. I'm giving myself a pass on Aaron Rodgers because you can't predict injuries for a guy who's never really injured, and without getting hurt he's one of the top two or three players last year. Then I took Forte and Jimmy Graham. All three of those picks (combined with my SOLID backup QB) should have been good enough to anchor a playoff team...but I fell apart after that, paying too much attention to potential sleepers and high-risk players than some safer picks to give me better consistency.

I whiffed HARD on my next two picks, picked it up a little with the two after that, and then bit the big one the rest of the way. My two biggest mistakes were: Taking Danny Amendola in the fourth round over Antonio Brown, Eric Decker, or Vernon Davis, and taking Tavon Austin over Golden Tate, or Josh Gordon.

Of course I made other mistakes and missed on some breakout stars later, but late in the draft, you're just throwing crap at the wall and hoping some sticks.

My draft is Saturday and picking 4th, I have no idea what to do...I'm guessing 1,2,3 will be Peterson, Brees, Manning in some order or another...if not, I'll snatch one of those three. If so...then I have no idea who I think the 4th best guy is. My work week just became flooded with very important fantasy football research.

I wanted this to be a separate post to avoid it all being so OVERLONG (which it all is anyway), but here are my predictions for the upcoming season.


AFC East
New England Patriots - They'll win the division AGAIN...due to the rest of the division just not being good enough....AGAIN.
Buffalo Bills - I love my Bills. I love this defense. Mario and Kyle Williams, Spikes...the front 7 is nasty. I hate Brian Moorman punting 27-yarders, but ultimately this team has one fatal flaw: Quarterback. EJ Manuel still looks shaky, and unless he develops a rapport with his teammates SOON, it's gonna be a long year. They'll take second in a weak division due to their defense winning a few games.
Miami Dolphins - I think their locker room and off-field issues will hurt them, and I just don't see "it" from Tannehill.
New York Jets - They will suck and I will laugh and laugh and laugh.

AFC North
Cincinnati Bengals - I don't know how you can pick against this team right now. They've got just about all the pieces in place, with the only question mark hovering around Dalton's head, who's at least shown he can play in the regular season. They should win but perhaps not as easily as last year.
Pittsburgh Steelers - Big Ben's certainly an X-Factor, and maybe nothing happens to their RBs during the season. Marshawn Lynch has dodged enough suspensions over the years...If this team can stay healthy, they could be contending for a wild card. The Steelers are never bad for very long, I like them to have a rebound year.
Baltimore Ravens - I still don't know who Flacco is planning on throwing the ball to this year. Their tight end situation should be better and that should help, but as much as I love Steve Smith, he's 35. An aging and embattled Ray Rice may have hit the wall, and I just don't think this team will be back up to snuff.
Cleveland Browns - This team is just absolutely not ready. Maybe in two years? They're a non-factor this year.


AFC South
Indianapolis Colts - The more things change in the AFC South, the more they stay the same. Peyton Manning may be gone, but Andrew Luck has arrived and the rest of this division just flat-out SUCKS.
Tennessee Titans - They are better than the Texans and Jaguars, but unless Jake Locker does the unthinkable, the Titans finishing second in this division will just prove that the AFC South is the weakest division in football.
Houston Texans - Ryan Fitzpatrick will win a game or two...and lose three or four (all on his own). The defense should be significantly better, but still, no matter what, at the end of the day Ryan Fitzpatrick is their quarterback. They could take second in this division I guess...but blech.
Jacksonville Jaguars - Quarterback, quarterback, quarterback. This team doesn't have one (yet. Look for Bortels to explode...NEXT year).

AFC West
Denver Broncos - A trendy pick, but I just don't see anyone in the AFC challenging them. They are too stacked with talent. We'll see if talent can trump whatever TEAM from the NFC makes the Super Bowl, as the Broncos will cruise their way to AFC domination again.
Kansas City Chiefs - This team is a trendy pick to fall off, but I don't see that happening. Alex Smith has proven himself to be pretty dang good and Jamaal Charles is GREAT. If anyone of KC's WRs ever decide to catch a ball, this team will be DEADLY.
San Diego Chargers - They'll battle it out with Pittsburgh this season for Wild Card #2. Things are better now that Norv Turner is gone, and their WR talent pool is stacked. Rivers MAY finally be maturing somewhat, and that will help them. They could be a dangerous "sleeper" team this year.
Oakland Raiders - Two simple words: Matt Schaub.

NFC East
New York Giants - They sucked last year, so that means Coughlin is ready to lead this team to a Super Bowl right? This was the toughest division to pick, but ultimately, I think they bounce back with a healthy WR-corps.
Philadelphia Eagles - The new offense is working in Philly, but I can't imagine Nick Foles playing at the same level as last year. Still, this team will be competitive in what is a really stacked conference.
Washington Redskins - RG3 may be healthier, but something about this team is just off-putting in terms of considering them contenders.
Dallas Cowboys - Jerry Jones will continue to hold this team back. Jason Garrett is not an NFL head coach. Tony Romo will suffer the wrath as a result. (this is the EXACT same thing I said as last year, but I don't see anything changing in Big D)


NFC North
Green Bay Packers - I love me some Aaron Rodgers, and Eddie Lacy has ARRIVED. This team will be back to a powerhouse this year.
Chicago Bears - They just fell a tad short last year, and I think this year, they may do so again. If they played in the AFC, I'd consider them a lock to make the playoffs.
Detroit Lions - They finally got rid of the worst head coach in all of football...but it's not like they've got anything exciting replacing him. Retread head coaches so rarely work out, and I don't see enough from this team to make me think that their unchanging formula of "Hope Stafford doesn't get hurt and Megatron just dominates" will make them a real threat.
Minnesota Vikings - One of the worst QB situations in the league. They should probably be a little bit better than last year MAYBE...but they're just not ready to compete yet.


NFC South
New Orleans Saints - They seem like the only team in this division that's a safe bet. Watch that turn out to be completely wrong...but it's really hard to pick against them.
Atlanta Falcons - If the WRs stay healthy, this is a potential Super Bowl contender. Unfortunately for them, if any of their top 3 WRs get hurt, they're in SERIOUS trouble now that they no longer have Tony Gonzalez to bail them out at TE. They're missing a piece or two to be taken as serious threat to New Orleans right now.
Carolina Panthers - I don't know who Cam Newton is planning to throw to...and it's pretty rare that a defense is as unflinchingly DOMINANT two years in a row as theirs was last year. I'm not predicting a total collapse, but I think a combination of things will make it a down year compared to last year.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers - There are things to like and things to not like. I still think this team is finding itself.

NFC West
Seattle Seahawks - Nasty defense, great running backs, solid QB play, good young receivers, what is there not to like about this team in terms of being a competitor? They're poised for another deep playoff run.
San Francisco 49ers - One of two things will happen with this team: either it's business-as-usual and they go about battling it out with Seattle for NFC dominance, or, after ANOTHER season falling short, the antics of their head coach, who is now my most hated coach in football, wear thin and this team starts imploding on itself. I'm kinda banking on the latter, if I'm being honest.
St. Louis Rams - The entirety of this team rests on Sam Bradford finally staying healthy. If he does, this could be a surprise contender.
Arizona Cardinals - I'm really confused by what this team did in the draft this year, and I don't see Carson Palmer making some kind of sudden resurgence. They were almost a playoff team last year, and so some are picking them to make it...I'm picking them to be a bit of a catastrophe.

Schedule complaints don't hold much water these days in terms of winning a division, because only two games per year are based on the previous season's schedule...

Every Tom, Dick, and Harry who watches football does power rankings...so here are mine:

THE UPPER CRUST
1.) Denver - hard to argue with them at this point. They've had to stave off a couple comebacks, but they are in cruise-control right now.
2.) Cincinnati - Both wins have been pretty impressive when you take into account what their opponents have done, and that they've played through an injury or two. This team's future still rests on Dalton's shoulders, but that weight looks a little lighter these days.
3.) Carolina - Obviously Tampa sucks and the Lions aren't world-beaters, but they've managed to win without their QB and the D has looked great again. So far it seems like that step-back year that many (myself included) predicted won't be happening.
4.) Arizona - Again I'm giving a lot of weight to winning on the road without their QB here, even if it was against a bad team. Also, the San Diego team they beat looks to be legit.
5.) Seattle - Hard to ding them too much for losing a game. On the road. Against a non-conference opponent. I wouldn't want to play them this week. At all.
6.) San Diego - "But they beat Seattle!" Shutup. If they played again right now, what team would you take? I'd still put money on Seattle but this team has looked pretty darn good through two games, loath as I am to admit as much.
7.) Philadelphia - Granted, the Colts were stupid and gave Philly a chance to get back in the game...but Philly still had to score, and they won a road game that pretty much everyone thought was a win for Indy.

THE MEATY CENTER
8.) Green Bay - Aaron Rodgers has smelled the smelling salts and I fear for every secondary in the league.
9.) Atlanta - A road loss to a non-conference opponent isn't much to get over-excited about. It's still early.
10.) San Francisco - The loss on Sunday was troubling. Questionable play-calling, terrible quarterback play, a complete and utter defensive collapse....at HOME. Chalk it up to opening day jitters maybe, but this team could FALL.
11.) Buffalo - A little high? Maybe. But they've beaten what looks like two decent if not good teams and they've looked fairly convincing doing so. I'm not saying Super Bowl just yet, but this Sunday's game against San Diego could be VERY interesting for the AFC as a whole.
12.) Chicago - They lost their home opener, but won another team's...both times they've had to come from behind, so it will be interesting to see what this team can do with a lead.
13.) Baltimore - I'm not 100% sold that winning a Thursday night game proves much of anything, but they might be putting this Ray Rice thing behind them effectively...and given his on-field production in recent years, it might be a good thing they cut him.
14.) New England - Call me cynical, but they beat Minnesota without Adrian Peterson...huzzah? I want to see this team in more games that it has to actually play rather than just walk off the bus to get the W.
15.) Houston - It's just really hard to be sold on a team whose wins are against some of the NFL's worst teams...and so again, week 3 won't prove anything (unless they lose). This team could take advantage of an easy schedule and division though for a surprise turn around.
16.) Miami - Many were saying after week 1 that this team will be exposed when homefield advantage of the heat and humidity of early-season Miami weather is over...after week 2, I'm inclined to believe them.
17.) Pittsburgh - Le'Veon Bell looks like the real deal. They need to figure out how to get him the ball more creatively and use his ability to rip off chunks of yardage to their advantage.
18.) Detroit - They ran into a very good Carolina team, and a very bad Giants team. I wanna see them play a team on their own stratosphere.
19.) New Orleans - That defense is a HUGE concern, but I'm still not convinced this team is BAD...Drew Brees is always an X factor.
20.) Indianapolis - Playcalling kept them from being 1-1. Lesson learned: Luck isn't Peyton Manning yet.

THE SOGGY BOTTOM
21.) Cleveland - Color me unconvinced for the moment...but this is a team to watch. Hoyer was good last year...this team may find it has little use (and even less NEED) for Manziel.
22.) New York Jets - Almost winning games isn't winning...and bad coaching doesn't usually get magically better after 6 years. This team is in dire need of leadership if they want to be consistently competitive.
23.) Dallas - Romo looks off, but if he can get back on this team could potentially compete in an NFC that just beats itself to smithereens.
24.) Tennessee - No matter what, they need to stick with Locker all year and get an answer to whether he's the guy.
25.) Washington - This team is a bit of an unknown quantity with Cousins on the field. With their brittle "superstar" sidelined AGAIN, they may want to make that quantity known, as it may soon be time to part ways with the man for whom they mortgaged their future...
26.) Kansas City - I'm not entirely ready to just throw them to the side and call them terrible...but Andy Reid's regression as a head coach is troubling and Jamaal Charles has never played 16 games in a season...

THE LEFTOVER GARBAGE
27.) Minnesota - I know they might not lose AP this year at all...but if they bend to public opinion and lose one of the only two bright spots on this entire team, this team showed Sunday that it's just a train wreck.
28.) Jacksonville - because umm...they've got some goodish young talent I guess.
29.) New York Giants - because with Houston coming to town they might maybe win a game.
30.) St. Louis - because winning a game with a third-string undrafted QB shows that even though they might be terrible, they haven't entirely quit
31.) Oakland - because though they're by FAR the worst team in the league in terms of talent and potential to win an upcoming game, they are TRYING.
32.) Tampa - because if you can't beat an undrafted qb at home, you just don't WANT to win.

- this isn't playoff seeding. I think some "better" teams have tougher games coming up, and will drop a little in the playoff standings as opposed to some of their "lesser" brethren, who will feast upon weak competition to get a spot.
32.) Tennessee - this team's just got nothing positive to mention at all. No fight, no pride, no forward momentum at any individual position. They suck.
31.) New York Jets - only a 3-win team because they played the NFL's most pathetic group of losers. This team also lacks pride, effort, and positives at individual positions.
30.) Jacksonville - they really do TRY, but they just lack talent and Bortles is definitely experiencing growing pains.
29.) Washington - RGIII's time in Washington is probably at an end, Gruden seems like a clown of a coach, and the future seems murky.
28.) Oakland - They only have 2 wins, but they're both QUALITY wins. Khalil Mack may wind up being the best defensive player from this past draft, and if their ownership weren't so inept, this could be a team with some pieces in place to build around.
27.) Tampa Bay - It's obviously not showing in the standings, but this team has become competitive down the stretch. Mike Evans seems like a future stud WR, and they've got some pieces in place.
26.) Chicago - That Cutler contract looks worse almost by the day...
25.) Atlanta - I really thought that with everyone healthy, this would be a team that would experience a major resurgence. I was wrong. Mike Smith is gonna get fired.
24.) New York Giants - They live-and-die by Eli and he's inconsistent. Not sure what the future holds for this team.
23.) Carolina - with Cam Newton, I'd give this team the division. With Derek Anderson, I don't see it happening.
22.) St. Louis - They have a solid coach, who manages to squeeze decent performances from pitiful talent. They need the players now.
21.) Minnesota - The AP situation is a mess, but this team has talent in other positions. They really just need Bridgewater to develop.
20.) Cleveland - It's pretty clear that Hoyer won't be back next year, as he isn't "The Guy". But Johnny Football doesn't look like THE GUY either. He looks awful.
19.) Houston - This might be the league's worst quarterback situation, which makes it remarkable that they made it all the way until this week before their season essentially died. JJ Watt is a monster and he ought to be league MVP.
18.) New Orleans - I still think it's possible that this team can click and come alive down the stretch, but Drew Brees is having a VERY rough year, and if he can't get his head screwed on straight, combined with his age and history of surgery, the Saints may need to start thinking about the future (I don't mean NEXT YEAR...but 2-3 years...)
17.) San Francisco - I hate Harbaugh and am glad they're out of the playoff hunt.
16.) Miami - The loss to Baltimore is what really sunk their season. One loss, that's all it takes sometimes. Switch the outcome of that game, and with games left against Minnesota and the Jets, this team is looking to go 10-6 and be playoff bound. Womp womp.
15.) Philadelphia - They might technically still be alive in the playoff hunt, but the reality of the situation is that they have Mark Sanchez. That's all I have to say about that.
14.) San Diego - Late-season choke artists. From 5-1 with that 1 being against a great Arizona team on the road, to losing just about every important game since then. Rivers has sputtered down the stretch and the injuries piled up at RB too much.
13.) Buffalo - A Super-Bowl-caliber defense and a top-5-pick caliber offense. This team with a QB would be DEADLY, and I say that attempting to be as little of a homer as possible. I truly believe you could plop someone like Ryan Tannehill (just an average QB) into this team and watch in horror as they decimated teams.
12.) Cincinnati - This is the ultimate "beat the bad, lose to the good" team. They not only beat the bad, they CLOBBER them...but then get DEMOLISHED by the good. Who knows what to think with this team? That tie is a wild-card in and of itself though. One more win and this team is in. Problem is, with Dalton playing worse with each game, I don't know if they can GET that one win...you don't get to play against a rookie in his first start every week...
11.) Baltimore - Unlike AP in Minnesota, the Ray Rice scandal was ultimately for the good of this team, I think. It gave them an excuse to move on from an aging, inefficient back to guys who can actually produce.
10.) Kansas City - This team is like the "little team that could"...they aren't affected by what anybody else is doing, they aren't remotely flashy, they just keep their head down and do what they do. They're a stud WR away from being an elite-level team.
9.) Arizona - I'd be all-in on this team with a QB. ALL in. So far in, I'd be coming back out.
8.) Detroit - I'd like to give this team more credit...but they're still the Lions, and they have won convincingly since...I dunno, the season started?
7.) Pittsburgh - This is a team that you just kinda have to hate. I mean, even when you think they're down and out, they somehow rip off a bunch of wins and find themselves in the mix of things. This might honestly be the greatest franchise in the history of the NFL. They're never bad for long, they've got a crap-ton of Super Bowls, and they've got stability out the ying-yang. I hate them for that.
6.) Indianapolis - I just can't buy into a team that has NO running game WHATSOEVER. The rushing attack is certainly no longer of extreme importance in the league, but occasionally, you need to be able to generate long, clock-killing drives and just run out a game. That will bite them in the ass in the playoffs. Still...they have one of the top 3 QBs in the LEAGUE right now.
5.) Denver - I think Peyton Manning is done, honestly. If the NFL were more like the NHL, he'd be like the stud center who essentially sits out the first half of the season, helps his team make the playoffs, and then plays his heart out in the post-season. Unfortunately, you can't sit out any games in the NFL and I think he can only physically handle like 12-14 games per year.
4.) Dallas - This team is beyond talented on offense. All they'll need to make a very serious run at the Super Bowl is a string of solid defensive performances.
3.) Seattle - Yes, they're beatable...they're not the JUGGERNAUT they were last year, but don't let that lull you into thinking they are anything other than an elite NFL squad.
2. ) New England - I hate having these guys this high but...ugh. They just win. That's all they do. It's all they've done for YEARS.
1.) Green Bay - don't let a drubbing by the Bills fool you, this is the NFL's team to beat. The defense is playing better than it has in YEARS, the rushing attack is solid, and Aaron Rodgers isn't going to have his worst game as a pro every single week...and apparently, even when he DOES have his worst game EVER he still has a chance to win. Rodgers is the best QB in the league and if not for JJ Watt, he'd have my running-away vote for MVP.

- my predictions for the teams that WILL make it:
AFC
1 - New England - seems obvious. Also, feels like the most likely candidate to rep the AFC in the Super Bowl. AGAIN
2 - Denver - by virtue of already being 11-3 they get the 2 seed. But this is starting to look and feel to me like a team that loses their first playoff game to someone who comes into the playoffs on a hot streak
3 - Indianapolis - they're the best team in a bad division but that boosts their record and they'll even have an outside shot at a first round bye.
4 - Baltimore - they've got too easy an upcoming schedule. I don't think they lose another game.
5 - Pittsburgh - I could see them losing this week and beating Cincinnati next week.
6 - Kansas City - I could see them winning out.

Part of me wants to put Cincinnati in there, over KC, because that tie basically means they are one win away no matter what. Problem is, with Dalton, I dunno if they can get that one. I'd also LOVE to be able to put my Bills in there, but they need help to get in. Buffalo will go 10-6 and miss it. That's my prediction.

NFC
1 - Seattle - I think they'll win out and wind up with tiebreakers.
2 - Green Bay - I think they'll also win out. But lose the conference record tiebreaker to seattle
3 - Dallas - I think they'll also win out. But lose conf. record tiebreakers.
4 - New Orleans - Like I said, I still think it can come together for them. Probably not enough to beat Green Bay or Seattle, but enough to actually win a playoff game.
5 - Arizona - They could wind up a 12-4 wild card team.
6 - Detroit - an 11-5 6-seed.

Philadelphia's the odd-man-out. They'll finish 10-6.

I think the NFC has the better teams, but as is usually the case when that's true, the conference with the weaker teams has a MUCH murkier playoff situation.

Baltimore, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, San Diego and Buffalo are all legitimately alive fighting for two spots.
I mean, even Buffalo, the longest shot, doesn't need anything SUPER crazy to get in...they need KC and San Diego to lose one more game and then either Baltimore, Cincy, or Pittsburgh to lose out...assuming of course the Bills win out. That's nothing that COULDN'T happen, considering KC plays Pitt this week, San Diego plays San Fran, KC and San Diego play each other at the end of the year, Cincinnati plays Denver and Pitt...I mean, it's on the table for the Bills to get in, which means there are LEGITIMATELY 6 teams in play for a pair of wild card spots. Craziness.

This is going to be a crazy final two weeks of the season. And I'd say this is the last time we'll see the current 12 team playoff format as its highly likely we'll have a 14 team playoff starting next season. And a 10-11 win team missing the playoffs again. (Possibly my Cowboys)
