For those who've read it, Marc Cerasini's "Godzilla 2000" provides a good template for a modern-day take on G:TTHM. Mind you, it was written for 13-year old boys, so it'll need to grow up a little.

I particularly like the mystical weight Cerasini gave Mothra and Ghidorah, without getting cheesy or using the Fairies. It wasn't hocus-pocus, but was all grounded in reality.

For a third film, well, I guess that depends on what happens in this movie and a potential second. But right now I like the idea of tying it into G'54 and using Destroyah.

Ah, screw it, just give me Bagan!

I think throwing in "some form of Mothra" (minus the fairies) would be pretty easy seeing as how the Mutos are pretty much big bugs anyway. But, I have a suspicion, or fear, that we'll be seeing more original monsters if any sequels are made, perhaps loosely inspired by other classic Godzilla foes but not "the real deal". The fact that this movie, which could be the launch of a new franchise, chose to go with homebrew opponents kind of sets the tone for what I'd expect in the future. I dunno, flying-muto may turn out to be kind of Megaguirus-inspired, but I guess we'll see.

But just for myself, I'm kind of tired of Mothra. I might be about to get lynched for saying this, but she really doesn't do all that much and I really think she's been overused. They would have to ditch all the "protector of the earth" backstory which leaves a big bug, and this movie has that covered. And as much as I like Mechagodzilla I wouldn't mind taking a pass on that one too. I've had plenty of Mechagodzilla for a while.

I'm also skeptical that Ghidorah will be used... seems to be that they're going for a quasi-realistic tone (even though of course it's not remotely) and I just can't see him being shoehorned in believably. I think something "inspired by" Hedorah or Biollante might be more likely. Or simply another big reptile... such as Anguirus. I think he deserves the shout out.

Anyone else notice that the spidery MUTO that Godzilla will be fighting is a sort of slicker, edgier reworking of this classic American kaiju?

The MUTO isn't a carbon copy obviously, but there are several similarities between the two designs that struck me the other day. :D

A guy named Chris over at TK claims to be in the know about the movie.

Out of all the stuff Chris spouts and people take as truth, this one is something which I refuse to believe.

I know monsters like King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Mechagodzilla seem to be the only popular monsters in Japan outside Godzilla, but I'm so sick of seeing them over and over again. I'd rather they just make new monsters with some attributes similar to other Toho monsters, like the unused Gryphon monster. I know there's no guarantee of that ever happening outside of this film, but it's just something I would like but it's obvious by now that new villains don't sell for whatever reason.
