Rifts? Eitherway Spider-man 2002 was one of the highest grossing films of the year and they bassically strayed a whole nother path from the comic.

I think the marketing for most movies has changed. Now we see teasers early on, eventually get a trailer, but the vast majority of marketing happens much closer to the movie's release date than before. I'm sure part of that is because of the internet - companies can bombard you with ads on sites like ESPN, youtube, etc. so they don't have to do as much over time.
