Expendables 2 is SO MUCH BETTER than the first one. It's actually the kind of movie you were hoping for the first time around. It's still got some problems, some that are easy enough to overlook because it's not supposed to be a "good" movie, some that I find GRATING. The dialogue is one of those things that irritates the crap out of me. It's at least better than it was in the first film, but there are still so many missed opportunities for good lines. At least we finally got SOME puns and quips and cheesy 80s dialogue (and JCVD is awesome as the villain), but there are still far too many times where there's a setup for a pun or a quip, and then the person who responds just basically repeats the previously spoken dialogue...
"This is bad."
"This IS bad."
"Nice touch"
"It is a nice touch"
"You must want to hurt me"
"I'm not gonna hurt you, I'm gonna take your life" (can't just say "kill you"???)
Barney Ross: I got an idea. And your ego, I think you're gonna love it.
Lee Christmas: My ego?
Barney Ross: Your ego.
Lee Christmas: What do you mean, my ego?
Barney Ross: You've got a big ego.
Lee Christmas: Well, check your ego out.
Barney Ross: Oh, please. Your ego is like the size of a dinosaur. Huge.
Ugh.
Then there's the part where Bruce Willis first talks to Stallone. Hes like, "I'm gonna send this girl with you." and Stallone says, "A girl?!?! But woman are in all ways inferior to men and incapable of assisting in any way, shape or form." Then Bruce says, "Don't worry, she's tough, she can fight, she can take care of herself. She'll help you. Trust me" and Stallone's like "Ok" then Bruce says, "Now, if she has even one small bruise, I'll kill ya."
Why send her along, if she's tough and can take of herself but then say she's not to be harmed at all? And also, it's not like the bit about her not coming to any harm comes back at any point, why is that even in there? Bruce Willis's character in these movies is SUCH a douche. He's not a hardass, he's like a borderline villain. He constantly threatens to kill people...
Oh and then there's also the part where JCVD has them all disarmed, and can just kill them, and doesn't because it's convenient to the plot.
So, OBVIOUS stuff like that sticks in my craw, but at least this one actually feels like a pretty fun action flick at times.
