Haven't updated here since Hobbit so here we go.

With my roommates we watched Star Trek the Motion Picture and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Always a joy.

Hanging with a friend I caught the last half of Superman 3. The good vs evil fight in the junk yard went on longer than I thought it did and the video game graphics when they fought Superman were pretty cool, and makes me wish some one would do a retro sprite style Superman game.

From there we watched Hammer's The Mummy, and we couldn't stop talking about how pimp Cushing was. His wife looks like the priestess the Mummy loved and had something like "She was considered the most beautiful woman in the world." "What do you mean by that?" "It was a much smaller world back then." And not a few minutes later he pops a cigarette in his mouth and waits for her to light it. It was great.

Going from Hammer horror to Spielberg bomb, we watched 1941. Wow that was.... something. It starts fast and never lets go, giving you no room to breath. Spielberg without reigns for the first time and he goes completely gonzo. While it is funny and has some really fantastic momments, and the minatures were phenominal, it is a loooong movie that just never seems to end. 1941 seemed less like a movie and more of a trial of endurance.

We finished the night with Duck Soup. I feel that from watching so much M*A*S*H as a kid I already know Groucho by proxy of Alan Alda, with a good helping of Bugs Bunny. But I know that isn't right, as I didn't know his mustache was, for the most part, painted on. Anyway, great humor and proof that even seventy years later, we still have the same problems with our government.

While at my folks house for a belated Christmas dinner I popped Trading Places on via netflix. It made me realize I never saw this movie before outside of Comedy Central. Way more boobage than I expected. Still a great comedy, especially unedited. Aykroyd stuffing salmon down a dirty Santa suit then chewing on it on the bus ride home had me in stitches.

The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug... this film would've been about 75 minutes long if it weren't for all the new hacky bullshit crammed in to it by Jackson & Co. Stephen Fry as the Master was a nice touch, though.

Chinatown - I've had the big twist of this film spoiled for years, but seeing it for the first time, it's still one sickening gut-punch of an ending.

Space Amoeba (in 35mm on the big screen!) -Okay, so this was actually back in August, but I never posted about it so there! It's still one of the weakest Toho kaiju films of the Showa era, but it still has its moments (the departure and infection of Helios-7, the encounter with Gezora underwater, Akira Kubo eluding and tricking Ganime off of the cliff) that do get a boost from the big screen. It didn't hurt that the screening was free!

Saw Frozen for the second time. Jesus, what a beautiful movie! Everything from the story, the characters, to the sophistication of the animation and art put into. A labor of love.

Ushered in Godzilla's 60th anniversary year by watching Emmerich's Godzilla (1998).

Call it a kind of exorcism.

Man of Steel Well, it was better than Superman Returns, I certainly liked the acting better and the overall story was good. And the action and special effects were excellent. But the ending really wasn't Superman, Superman would have found another way.

The Lone Ranger Actually a pleasant surprise from what I was expecting. Yes Johnny Depp was too over the top as Tonto, but they kept the essence of who The Lone Ranger was supposed to be. It was fun to watch and I'll certainly watch it again.

Despicable Me 2 Not as much fun as the first one, but that still leaves a lot of room for enjoyment. The minions stole the show of course.

So we just finished the first season and man, what an ending. I just loved the last few episodes, especially the final one. I have to say I have never seen a show before that gave us so much character development on just the ghosts alone, it was great. There are some things I feel were pointless in the series (such as the Piggy dude), and it probably could have been about two episodes shorter, but in the long run, it was excellent. The characters were great, well developed, the music was great (love the opening, very classic industrial sounding), and it was something unique and original. In fact, I'd say it put every horror movie released in the last five years to shame as they truly focused on suspense and story telling over jump scares. Overall, I give the first season an 8/10 and I cannot wait to see Asylum now.

I just finished watching Ninja: Shadow of a Tear, the sequel to 2009's Ninja starring Scott Adkins. I've gotta say, the movie was pretty friggin awesome for a direct to video release. It's very old school in its premise and martial arts action. No wires or CG, just raw martial arts goodness. Its a more solid story than the first movie and basically revolves around revenge. Scott Adkins does an amazing job throughout the movie and a wonder to watch. Kane Kosugi is also in this and brings the action with him. Seriously, he should be such a bigger star. If you haven't seen the first one, check it out along with this. The first movie doesn't have the greatest story and even Scott and the director, Isaac Florentine admit that they didn't put enough depth into the character and story the first time around. I think they remedied that with this sequel.

I watched that a little bit ago. It's alright - definitely a combination of DB humor and fighting. Bills was amusing but overall the movie was just ok for me.

Finished my Harryhausen set with It Came From Beneath the Sea and 20 Million Miles to Earth. Haven't seem 'em since my teenage years, and I liked It Came a bit more than I remembered. I think in terms of, you know, acting and general normal movie stuff It Came is technically better... but 20 Million Miles is better just 'cause of the Ymir. The Ymir is so cool.

So I recently got dragged into seeing the latest Paranormal Activity... and I all I can say is wow.. It's a real rip from Chronicle. I won't say that I didn't enjoy it though, but so far none of the sequels have been able to match up to the level of the first one..

Finished the Conjuring tonight. Alright movie. Of a lot of these recent poltergeist/possession/haunted house movies this one didn't really insult my brain or anything. Looked pretty, too.

American Hustle - So yeah... we just got back from seeing this movie and well, it kind of sucked. It sucked that it is easily the best movie of 2013!!! My god this movie was freaking awesome and put The Wolf of Wall Street to shame and did it in two hours instead of three. The cast of the movie was fantastic. Christian Bale was nothing short of pure excellence, but Jennifer Lawrence is easily the best character in the movie. Every bit of dialog she had was brilliant and she easily stole the show. The comment she makes in th movie about being the life of a the party rings true in every scene she is in. Jeremy Renner finally decides to show off that he does know how to act, something I haven't seen since he did "The Hurt Locker." There is another actor that shows up that was great in his little cameo, but I'm not going to ruin it, so you either have to spoil it for yourself or go see it to know who I am talking about. The movie moves at such a swift pace that it is over when it needed to be without dragging on Not to mention the movie actually has a payoff for the character's actions at the end, which was amazingly well done. Danny Elfman does a fine score for the movie as well, and it was surprising that it was him because this movie seems out of his element. Nevertheless, he did a fantastic job as well. In fact, there is nothing bad I can say about this movie outside of the first ten minutes, which started out a little rough. The dialog is witty and fun, the story holds a sense of seriousness over it while being comedic when it needs to be, that there is nothing I have seen at all in 2013 that can compete against it. As amazing as I found "The Hobbit" to be, this movie is just superior in what it wanted to be and achieves it with exuberant finesse. This is definitely a must see, especially because where us do you get to see Batman, Lois Lane, Rocket Raccoon, Hawkeye, and Mystique all working together at one time? :-p Overall, I'm giving this thing an excellent Chuck Norris/10.

Just rewatched Negadon, the Monster From Mars for the first time in years. It's a short but fun. Negadon is a cool kaiju with crazy weaponry, and Miroku is just awesome.

Watched a flick called 'Drinking Buddies' which was supposed to be a comedy, but the pacing was terribly slow and the ending was a little bit of an eye roll.

Watched Elysium. DIdn't like this as much as District 9, but still I love the worlds Blomkamp creates. Really dug the score here as well.

I watched my newly bought blu ray copies of Terminator 2 Judgement Day and Source Code.

Does anyone else remember T2 Judgement Day being an entertainment milestone when it came out? I remember its use of CGI was a huge deal. However after watching the movie with fresh eyes. I don't think its aged as gracefully as the original Terminator. Some of the humor feels misplaced and I feel some of the new actors (mostly furlong) are very hammy. I think I prefer the grittiness of the first one compared to the sequel.

Now as for Source Code, I love this film. Its like Ground Hog's Day meets Quantum Leap. Duncan Jones (Zowie Bowie) is a phenomenal director. I think I like Moon more but its only by a hair (mancrush on Sam Rockwell) The plot is fast paced but still deep. The world is well realized. Depending on how Duncan Jones handles the Warcraft movie, he might wind up being one of my favorite directors.
