Varan is like Anguirus or Rodan - they're not too fantastical (compared to say.. Gigan) so they'd fit in a realistic approach.

I was actually thinking it would be a cool easter egg to just have Godzilla rising up in San Fran harbor and have him pass by the Calico as he makes landfall. Nothing special, just a fan nod. But ummm... no. No Godzooky, much as I love the little imp.

Total side note, but I always thought Gigan before his metal enhancements would have been a cool story to go through. Not for this movie, but he is one of favorite kaiju.

So toho didn't allow for it? Shame... That could have been an entire story arc.

Is one creature who I can't understand the fixation over. People sneer and go "Pfft you like Desotoroyah! How juvenile!" And I'm left scratching my head going

"Well, give the choice between hulking crustacean deathmachine and a flying squirrel lizard who got less than 5 seconds in one movie, and a bland movie the other, I'm not seeing what you're so smug about."

I mean, I can get behind Gorosaurus for so many things, and of course the lovable Anguirus for is scrappiness. But Varan?

I think the notion is it's a pretty cool design that people would like to see given a solid outing, instead of a bland movie and then a background cameo.

I'm not even convinced most of the Heisei designs are good anymore...They're WAY too big and bulky for me...I guess re-designs could fix some of that though...

I love Varan's design as well - that's the main reason I think it would work.

Hedorah ... I just hate. It's my personal bias. I see how he's a powerful foe and could be a relevant story for today's audiences, but I'm honestly sick of "green" movies. So could it work? Sure, but it wouldn't be my first choice anymore than seeing "The Happening" or "Day the Earth Stood Still" (remake) would be.
