^^^I feel we're on opposite sides of the same base-plate on this issue, not the entire ballpark. For me and my interests its enogh to say that he appeared in Japan in 54 or the Japanese islands such as Odo as you mentioned with a single scene harkening back to that visit (though I seem to feel something in the interview that indicated the '54 lighting made it seem certain '54 scenes (if not all) would be in a city, perhaps that's just where witnesses come to testify afterwards). That homage in itself is enough to warrant comparisons on the news using footage of those respective scenes from both the original and the new film side by side in a way that would incite some to gain more interest than usual in the original film to see how interrelated they are. Even if posters thing that in no way makes the film a soft sequel, the idea that the Ogata role might in any way be reprised has been "shot down" as nonsense by posters here as well, and that Odo Island scene alone with a different retelling where Godzilla isn't seen in Japan shortly thereafter, and no one is believed about it being more than a typhoon could make that a reality. Perhaps even using a picture from one of the deleted scenes of them on Odo Island together

As for the court case I'm just stating that the character is well established in response to the idea that people say they've met no one whose seen a Godzilla film, implying no one knows a thing about his nuclear origin and a reference to '54 tests bringing him to life or the mainland would leave fans thoroughly confused without further details. I'd expect more of an explanation than G2K's "he's always been there" kind of deal, especially since we've been told we're getting an origin story, but in a way even GvKG was an origin story, whereas 54 left us without one, just the origin of his introduction to the world. I think thats what we'll be getting here as well, but there's a consensus that its reasonable to think his origin may be attributed to '54 testing, meaning its also likely he's been spotted by someone at least once. We know there's a flashback to '54. And if he's not a known commodity to most but they're going as far as to bring in '54, Odo island makes some sense.
Also I've been meaning to get around to the IDW series. How's it compare to past comics like Age of Monsters or the Marvel series? Or even novels like the Random House continuity? perhaps I'll check it out after I recover from Christmas spending...next semester. Wonder if they'll do a new series as a 2014 tie in?
and jelly speaking of the hobbit reviews for the trailer make it sound identical to the 2nd comic con (assuming he's to be believed but the runtime fit anyway):
