I'm on Team Jelly here. This "sequel to 54" talk is getting silly and I honestly can't believe people would think that its what we're getting, especially since Edwards said this is an origin film. Anybody who thinks the relevance of the year 1954 in the plot is anything more than an easter egg is kidding themselves, for reasons Jelly has already stated very well.

Also, for the record, I've never met somebody who watched a Japanese Godzilla movie before I showed them one.

Yeah I'm not on board with referencing the original 1954 film either. Why does everything have to kiss its ass in some form or another? Making a psudeo-sequel to a film made 60 years ago would be bad enough, but if that's some people's thing I guess It's a Wonderful Life 2 is going to be right up their alley.

I also hope Godzilla hasn't been present since 1954 like some are suggesting. It still smacks of an inability to let go of something-- the Heisei and Millennium series had a hard enough time with that. Pull a Guadian of the Universe, let go and reinvent. Of all the issues that I had with GINO, being set in present day was nowhere on that list.

Perhaps the '54 reference isn't about Godzilla, per se, but about the Bikini atoll blast that woke him up in the original? Just a thought...

It's kinda' silly to argue whether "Godzilla" will or won't be a sequel. We're all in the same boat…we have no idea.

However, there's no reason to be convinced it couldn't be a sequel, and work well, even with American audiences unfamiliar with the original.

Again, take "Superman Returns" (minus the suck). Superman was here, he left, he's back. Easy as 1, 2, 3.

So, Gareth Edwards way[in 2005] before "Monsters" and "Godzilla" dabbled in Japanese city destruction/devastation as digital fx artist on this BBC "Hiroshima" documentary:

This may give us a hint at what to expect as far as visuals of the sets. Watch the entire film here for free!!:
