You realize this means that the Showa Godzilla compares to the Legendary Godzilla in the same way that King Kong compares to Showa Godzilla.

That's kind of crazy.

wow...could also have just gone off it being the 25th floor of a building, and a building floor being approximately 15 ft, give or take.

Don't forget the whining that Godzilla isn't getting as hyped as a Hunger Games movie that comes out in a MONTH.

Also I would like to point out that while complaining about a trailer not have an official release might be premature, but it's not un-warranted. There's a lot of fans who remember how hyped up GINO was leading to its release, and that set the bar quite high for marketing for this movie. Coupled some general public confusion on this being a sequel to GINO, while Legendary saying its in the same spirit as the original film, I can see why people are anxious for Legendary to publicly distance themselves from GINO.

That being said, Legendary/WB doesn't OWE fans anything. That' not reasonable. But being publicly dissapointed that nothing was shown to the public at Comic-Con? Well I can at least understand where they are coming from.

Thing is, movies don't have the exact same ad campaigns that GINO had anymore... Event movies are a dime a dozen now, the 90s only gave audiences a handful to go around per summer. Now we have blockbuster promises every weekend.

I saw Jurassic Park, during it's first run, six months after its release day. Promoting a film the same way GINO was made a little more sense if there were box office aspirations/hauls similar to Jurassic Park, The Lion King, Independence Day...etc... But movies just don't stay in theaters that long during their first run anymore and I imagine inflation makes up for that long haul we used to have. It doesn't make sense to build up the biggest thing of the summer anymore when the next biggest thing is going to be the following weekend. And that's kind of what it's come down to-- Opening weekends mean everything in the age of instant gratification.

Unfortunately that same instant gratification has soured fanbases as well. They expect results just as quickly as most corporations do...

This isn't to say I think people should just give up on strong ad campaigns. Quite the reverse in a way. Strong doesn't mean overkill, either. There's such a thing as overexposure and coming in too hot. (We could argue GINO was an example of that.) I want an ad campaign the gets people interested and aware. I don't need Taco Bell ads to do it.

Pop culture moves so insanely fast now, and our collective cultural attention span is so short, that it really only takes a one-two solid, well-received trailers to get an audience jacked for a film.

Think back to Batman Begins and the intentionally minimalist marketing for that film. Like G'14, it was the resurrection of a franchise from a previous entry that had been panned. Mind you, Batman had already proven to be a box office juggernaut prior to Nolan, so it's not an apples-to-apples comparison.

But I still think there's going to be a groundswell of anticipation once folks starting seeing material. And while I hope WB doesn't copy Sony's "Hide the monster" nonsense, G'14 is a case where less is more in marketing a film.
