Jurassic Park (1993) - also saw this in the theater tonight. It makes me feel old to realize that I saw this on initial release at the tender age of 10 (my first real PG-13 movie!).... TWENTY YEARS AGO. Dang.
Saw it in Real-D 3D XD (is that enough "D's" yet?). XD is Cinemark Theaters' in-house IMAX clone. As far as I can recall this is the first ever 3D post conversion I've seen and I must say I was wary with trepidation, but I really wanted to see it on a ridiculously huge screen so I took the chance...
I must say, overall, I was actually quite impressed. I'm generally not a big fan of 3d to begin with but I can enjoy it as a gimmick from time to time and this was quite a fun film to have that gimmick experience. Some shots really looked amazing with the new added depth. That scene where the pull up the hill in the jeep to see a dinosaur for the very first time and then show the expanse with the lake and all the other dinos was particularly striking. And several key shots of the T-Rex, especially where he roars right at the camera, were spectacular.
But not everything was perfect. The biggest issues were really just a result of this film not being framed and photographed with 3d in mind. Speilberg loves to do really interesting compositions on the close ups that tend to be very Kurosawa-esque with things out of focus in the foreground of the shot. This does NOT translate well in 3d conversion as you end up with a bunch of close ups with big ugly blurry foreground objects RIGHT IN YOUR FACE!!!! distracting from the otherwise nice shot. Other issues that stuck out were the reflections on glass (again, especially in the close ups on faces through car windows) and lens flares often looked odd and like they were floating in the wrong plane of space.
As for the Xd theater, it was pretty cool. The screen was huge (not as big as a real IMAX, and in a more theatrical 1.85 to 1 ratio - cant compare it to a digital "LIE-MAX" as I've never been to one). The sound was great. The projection was pretty good for digital. Online I've read differing reports on whether its a 2 or 4K projector. All I know is I did see some aliasing. It was VERY minor (the thin curving edge of sunglasses rims) but it was there. There was also one shot in the whole movie where I saw compression artifacts. S not perfect, but still a nice experience over all.
In the end I'm glad I saw it in 3d on the ridiculous giganto screen. It was a ton of fun, the fx still held up great and seeing Stan Winston's monsters so big an detailed was an absolute treat! It was also fun that there were a BUNCH of families with boys in the age range of 10 to 12ish all seeing it for the very first time ever. Hearing their reactions of terror and delight throughout the film made it all the more enjoyable and provided a little trip down memory lane from the first time I saw it way back when...
