I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. A lot of the disappointment some people have (those who don't think it's a Harry Potter ripoff) is the lack of "new and shiny". This is a world we have been to before, and Peter Jackson isn't trying to awe us with bigger, flashier effects work, he's using the same techniques that worked in the LOTR trilogy. (While writing this I flashed to The Hobbit as done by Michael Bay, exploding wargs EVERYWHERE!)
I can understand some complaints, (yes Radaghast was disgusting looking, maybe GDT's influence) and there was a lot of running away going on. (My comment to a friend who I watched it with, "Gandolf the Grey's Fatburner plan! RUN! RUN! RUN!) but I left the movie looking forward to the next one.
And the cast was was great. Martin Freeman made an excellent Bilbo, and Richard Armitage was a Thorin Oakenshield who was an extremely credible leader. Yes, there were a number of dwarves who were more or less there to fill the space specified in the story, but with such a large cast, there were going to be some who got more focus than others.
BTW, I saw it in 24fps 2d. But from the comments, I might try out the high rate 3d at the nearby IMAX.
