I just got this on DVD recently, never took the time to see it before, save for a few clips online. Very strange mixture of monster movie and some political commentary, and the comedic bent was a little strange, too. Overall, I did like it, but I missed a few scenes and need to see it again, (was nodding off, I really only watch movies late at night after I'm done with everything).... The ending was a sad and shocking surprise that went against conventions, and the central family characters were pretty damn endearing, for all their quirkiness (and a bit annoying at times, but what family isn't?).

Also, extra cool points for casting Scott Wilson (Hershel from The Walking Dead) and Doona Bae from Cloud Atlas (credited as Bae Doona here).

8-)

Quantum of Solace - It starts out a little rough, but once the movie hits the opera scene it gets really good. Not in my top 10 (would be my 11th), but it is far better than 90% of the action movies out on the market in the last 5 years and has a lot of great puns and one liners. I just wished they could have cut down on the action in the first half hour and added more development to Mr White and Quantum. Plus, I love the homage to Goldfinger.

The Princess Bride

Do I have to say anything? Everyone loves this movie, right?

Flaws? I find some of the sketchier special effects charming, but I could do with a better score. I feel fairy tale adventures and swashbuckling should have full orchestra backing, not generic, keyboard-produced '80s music.

I like the score for Princess Bride...maybe because I grew up on the movie, so I've always just loved the score for what it is.

I'm afraid this will sound a bit pretentious, but here goes...

I liked the movie version of "The Princess Bride" when I was a kid, but when I read the book in high school, I was stunned by the degree to which the movie missed the point, and now I mostly find the movie kind of annoying/insulting.

^I found certain parts of the book excellent... but the constant interruptions from the cynical adult Goldman (a fictionalized version of the real author) really bugged me. Indulging in romantic whimsy while constantly interrupting said whimsy to say that it's childish and ridiculous seems like a way for the author to have his cake and eat it, too.

I feel Goldman was very wise to remove this in his screenplay, ending up with a film I find superior to the book.

I appreciate the flatness, I found the contrast in this case infuriating - I actually got angry while reading it!

The Prisoner of Zenda (1937)

Awesome adaptation of the classic historical adventure novel. It has a great cast - great everything, really. Some of these Old Hollywood films have that feeling of just being effortless, you know? Like everyone's charming and talented and professional and they enjoyed making the film and as a result you enjoy watching said film.

I've never read The Princess Bride, but I wouldn't call the movie a missed opportunity. There are FAR too films like it in existence. If anything, it seizes an opportunity that most film (ESPECIALLY today) shy away from.
