Castle in the Sky

One of the best, of course. This new Blu-Ray blows the DVD away in terms of picture quality... but: dubtitles! Dreaded dubtitles!

Jeez, this kinda think happens way to often. With a quarter or so of my collection of movies and TV in Japanese I should honestly just learn the language!

Werewolf: The Beast Among Us
ugh. If some of these ideas had been better executed there could have been a cool or interesting film.

Sinister- An above average haunted house movie. It avoids a lot of the normal cliches (ie we're given a reason why they won't move out of the house) and offers some interesting angles on the genre. Its basically the movie that would tell you about the dude that finds the footage to all those found footage movies. Pretty clever stuff, although there were some directorial choices that bothered me (jump scares, showing a wee bit too much of the ghost, the ghost looking like a member of Slipknot, etc). But all in all, a really solid flick. The dialogue is smart and the acting is great (Ethan Hawke was fantastic). Also, all the Super 8 film that Hawke's character sifts through is truly chilling stuff... stuff that nightmares are made of, honestly.

I recommend it! It felt good to see a GOOD horror movie in the theaters again this time of year.

Octopussy - Like TSWLM, not as bad as I initially thought, but it does have a lot of cringe inducing scenes such as the Tarzan yell. Who the hell thought that was a great idea? I like the music to the movie, but it moves at the pace of a snail. No where near as bad as Moonraker, but nowhere near as good as Live and Let Die.

A View to a Kill - This one is a mixed bag. Like what I just said, not as bad as I thought it was, but Christopher Walken is the main reason to watch this movie. He is just awesome in it. Moore looks too old to be Bond at this point (even worse than Octopussy), and the Russian girl served absolutely no purpose in the movie other than for fan service. On the other hand, the battle over the Golden Gate Bridge was pretty cool and the opening theme is by far the best since Live and Let Die. The girl, on the other hand, was pretty useless in this movie because all she did half the time was whine.

Overall, the Moore movies are huge let downs, especially considering how good Connery's era was. Moore himself had some really great moments, but the dude seemed to be a super human at times, especially in his last few moments when his age really showed. The biggest problem with his era of movies though outside of getting campy is that they are just not all that interesting. They each have some interesting ideas, but a lot of the characters are boring, especially in the villains department. Outside of Mr Big and Scarlamanga, no one really stands out when you look at the previous era with Largo, Blofeld, Dr No, Klebb, and Grant. Even the Bond girls during this era were not all that exciting as a lot of them seemed to more dummies than anything else. I'll take Tatiana, Aki, and Tracy over Goodnight, Goodhead, and Sutton any time.

Snow White and the Huntsman - ultimately kind of a missed opportunity.

it wasn't bad, but there were a few character decisions with Snow White and the queen that I didn't like. Specifically, I was not a fan of making the queen sympathetic and thought the only person Snow White should have actually attacked was the queen, rather than all those random guards and stuff...

Even leaving those two things aside, the movie was WAY too joyless, and could have used a lot more humor to punch things up and make it seem like the running time went by faster.

And even leaving all that aside, it could have been a fine film had it been like twenty minutes shorter.

Fixing all of those things, it would actually have been a REALLY good movie...and even as it is, it's a cool take on the story...
better than i thought it would be, but the story itself doesn't lend itself well to a serious take and this particular take was too joyless to enjoy.
Gills.

The Secret World of Arrietty

Third time viewing, first time in the original language. This, like Howl, is one of those Ghibli films that really grows on you.

I really need to give Howl's Moving Castle another chance, but I liked Arietty pretty well the first watch through.

Goldeneye - A really good movie, and a great starter for Brosnan. It isn't anywhere near my top choices of Bond movies, but it is definitely far from the bottom. I really like Sean Bean in it, but it just seems odd having a Bond movie that does not really utilize his signature theme song. Outside of one scene, I do not recall hearing even a remixed version of it at all.

Tomorrow Never Dies - Pretty good movie as it felt different form the others. It was nice to have a villain that was just a journalist who went too power hungry instead of some highly trained terrorist. The action scenes are pretty good, as is the music. Not as good as Goldeneye, but definitely an enjoyable one.

The World is Not Enough - What can I say here? The movie starts out with an excellent prologue, has one of my favorite theme songs, but then it just keeps getting worse as it goes along. Not to mention they chose one of the worst actresses out there to play the Bond girl in this movie, with one of the most ridiculous names that is not even funny. Not as bad as Moonraker or Die Another Day, but it is by far one of the worst Bond movies.

Argo

Good movie..very tense finale. A woman actually had a heart attack at my showing. I hope she's ok...

Evil Dead 2 - My absolute favorite of the trilogy.

Sweeney Todd - I loved the music, and while the film isn't quite up to what I'd like, it's still a really great take on it.

Evil of Frankenstein - Well, it's alright. The terrible monster makeup and a story that's not really as engaging as the previous two make it the weakest of the films thus far.
