Ghostbusters - the Alamo Drafthouse near me showed this to a packed house tonight. There was a loop of old GB toy, cereal, and cartoon promos running before the show. They also had the local GB fan club there in (really well done) costumes for photo ops before and after. And there was a (sadly not stay-puft) marshmallow eating contest. The film itself was a digital projection of what is apparently a recent restoration/remastering. It's one of, if not the best digital projections I've ever seen. It was very hard to tell it wasn't film. And the crowd was great. An all around great time!

Oh, and of course the theater employee introducing the show just had to mention that the drafthouse in Austin is showing it in 70mm in a few days... Agh! I've never seen a real 70mm projection but it's on my short list of movie experiences I HAVE to have!

How the West Was Won

Early '60s epic western showing several generations of the same family (involving a whole heck of a lot of stars) to tell the story of western expansion. Filmed in Cinerama, which was the IMAX of it's day - and one of the few real movies made for that process.

Nowadays it's held up as the example that the Hollywood epic westerns had run their course and that the new crop of grittier westerns needed to come in and revitalize the genre. I can see that, as a lot of this film comes off as hokey and big for the sake of being big (it feels a bit like a typical modern blockbuster in some spots), but being an anthology means certain sections are better than others. The segment revolving around the railroad was my favorite. Great photography and score.

The Wild Bunch

I can understand why this movie caused such a stir when it was released. Forget shades of gray; these guys are all shades of black! What makes the eponymous bunch the heroes is that they at least have some noble qualities. When I use what I hope is the more logical and moral part of my brain I think there's very little that's commendable about any of these characters... but at the same time you get that moment near the end when the bunch decide to stop fighting for selfish intentions and instead fight for honor and the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and you get a bit giddy. Peckinpah does a great job of mixing revulsion, excitement, and admiration.

The Cabin in the Woods- I thought it was a pretty well done movie and interesting take on the horror genre.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

It's late, and I just finished watching the movie and I should really get some sleep and I doubt I can come up with a coherent overview of why this is an awesome movie.

So: movie is good

Good night, everybody![/code]

Once Upon a Time in the West

This is my favorite Leone. I love how after the Dollars trilogy Leone and Morricone had sharpened their stylistic tools and, with this more emotionally complex story, knew to dial back said stylistic flourishes until necessary. In the previous films the story was the style, in this one the style is in service of the story.

... and I'm sorry Clint, but I think I like Harmonica just a little bit more.

So I just watched Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade BDs. Temple of Doom is a really fun movie, has some amazing set pieces, an awesome final battle, but my god I think I hate Willie even more with every viewing. She is what really brings the movie down a notch for me. But still, this is probably the first time I have enjoyed this movie as much within the last 10 years.

The Last Crusade is just down right awesome to see again. Every seen with Connery is hysterically brilliant. However, I just realized something. They say in this movie that a single drink from the Holy Grail will being long lasting life. If that is true, why is Henry dead in KotCS and why is Indy so old? Anyway, the movie itself is always a pleasure to watch but I do have to say, Raiders is definitely the best of the trilogy. This one used to be my favorite, but seeing Raiders in theater and then watching them again this weekend has really shown me how truly unique and incredible Raiders is.

With that said, I'll be watching KotCS for the first time since I saw it in theaters shortly. Let's hope I still enjoy the movie since I never hated it as much as others did before.

No. The answer is that KotCS is an abomination of a film and should have never been made. Don't watch it again, it is so bad that it will only take away from the original trilogy
