Just watched the 1936 movie "H.G. WELLs' THINGS TO COME" and it was really good. Turns out this movie was pretty prescient about the next world war, though you might not have needed a crystal ball to predict Germany's ambitions in 1936, as well as the progression of technology. This movie has a lot of impact with its frank depiction of the fall and rise of society and has a very Ayn Rand-ian take on what will/would save society. I watched this because in the documentary The Sci-Fi Boys Forry Ackerman named it has one of his three most well regarded movies. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who is a fan of science fiction movies with a strong human condition story. It does have a slant as I said when I mentioned Ayn Rand, but it also has some very great lines about humanity.

Yojimbo

This is just a perfect movie. I've had a bit of trouble watching this all-the-way through the last few days (busy, holidays, ect.), and whenever I came back to watching it I'd skim through the parts of the film I'd already watched... but the film's just so good I'd end up basically watching the whole thing over again.

You know, Sanjuro isn't quite the anti-hero some take him for: he's pretty upfront with Gonji about saving the town via turning to two gangs against each other from the get-go. He's set up as coming exclusively from a moral place in the first ten minutes.

Last year I traded in my Yojimbo/Sanjuro DVD set and used the store credit for getting the same set on Blu-Ray - now that I've bought my Sergio Leone Dollars Trilogy Blu-Ray set I've decided to watch five "Man With No Name Movies" one after another.

Saw a couple kaiju movies today that I hadn't seen before:

Space Amoeba was pretty unspectacular, and I was especially disappointed because the Japanese trailer made it look like it'd be close in tone to Son of Godzilla or Ebirah. If it had been less serious and more relaxed, I might have forgiven the rushed plot more easily, but the movie's underwhelming as it is. I was also disappointed that Ifukube recycled the KKvG theme for this film. I love the KKvG theme, mind you; I just thought this was an egregious case of the man recycling superior music for an inferior film. Anyway, I might revisit this one later, if only to evaluate it on its own terms rather than my initial expectations, but that probably won't be very soon. Ganime and Kameba look cool, though. (Can't say I'm a fan of Gezora - he just looks too fake, especially with his painted-on eyes.)

Atragon, on the other hand, I enjoyed. Some interesting characters and themes, and the plot and the Mu Empire reminded me of H. Rider Haggard's She at times. I do wish it had been longer, in order to further develop the characters and the global vs national concerns theme, but I was satisfied with what was presented. I did gripe at the scene where the explosives specialist opens up the delivery from the Mu Agent in a room full of other people (including civilians), but hey... Also, I gotta say, the Gotengo is probably my new favorite piece of military hardware from Toho's sci-fi movies. I'd seen it in GFW, of course, but I developed a fuller appreciation for it after seeing Atragon.

I love Space Amoeba, but you're right. The trailer makes it seem like it'll be a mostly comedic film, and then the film itself is a little more serious. I think I'd love for it to have been more as the trailer conveyed, but I like it fairly well as is.

Batman Begins - an underrated gem, often overlooked because of The Dark Knight.
It's probably the second-best Batman film, although it is admittedly my third-favorite. Maybe I like the first Burton film better because of nostalgia, but I like to think it's because Jack gives a bit more memorable performance as The Joker than Liam as R'as. Still, there's some pretty fantastic stuff happening in this movie and I like this Batsuit better than the one in The Dark Knight.
