Went to a 1950s alien invasion triple feature at the Sci-Fi Center yesterday.

Attack from Space -- Starman! 'Nuff said.

Teenagers from Outer Space -- After seeing it so many times on MST3K, this was my first time seeing it unriffed. It came off as a fuller film, but more from being unedited than some guys making fun of it. TORTCHAAAA!

Invasion of the Body Snatchers -- Never seen this before, shame on me. Great atmosphere, in tune with that Cold War mindset, proof you can make a great alien invasion movie without awesome special effects, and it was nice seeing Sam Peckinpah as an aspiring actor. But one question -- why did the pods produce doubles of the people when they were just going to take over their minds, and what happened to those doubles afterward?

Zone Troopers after all the years of seeing the box in the video rental store as a youngster and not being interested in it I finally decided to watch this, thanks to a podcast about the Rocketeer and that Netflix streaming had it available. I found this to be pretty good and enjoyed it quite a bit. If I had seen it all those many years ago instead of now I suspect that I would have really liked this movie then and have fond thoughts of it now, but I never liked the box art with the hairy bug eyed alien on the cover with the words I Want YOU on it. World War II and aliens would have been right up my alley then as it still is now, but I always thought it was some type of slasher movie and I have fairly low interest in those. I was pretty surprised by the quality looking crashed alien space craft outside and inside; I was disappointed by most of the action sequences, but I'm spoiled by the awesomeness of Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers. All in all pretty good and I'm glad I saw it.

The Dark Crystal

Wow. I liked this one even more than Labyrinth. Simple but clever story and pretty much all the creature races and individuals are very cool, especially the Skeksis.

Beauty and the Beast (46)

Hypnotic imagery. Feels more like a silent film at times. Good film.

The wife and I watched Contagion recently.

I liked it a lot...but it was a bit anti-climactic. The weird part is that's actually one of the things I kinda liked about it. It's a very grounded, 'realistic' film, so there's no real opportunity for a major climax, just like real life.

Oh but
[spoiler alert]

I totally thought that when Kate Winslet got sick, it was going to turn out to just be like a regular flu...I even started pre-giggling in preparation for the moment when they would tell her she just had the plain ole sniffles.

Six was a great movie. This and Kahn are my two favorites in the series. I prefer Kahn, but I think the two are pretty equal in terms of enjoyment. I still have to get these on DVD someday.

Rise of The Planet of the Apes

The more I watch this movie, the more I can see things that may be considered by some as "too convenient." Like, if the 113 virus was so contagious (which, judging by the last scene in the movie was quite apparent), then why didn't Will get sick after Franklin sneezed right next to him? Or, how did the apes at the zoo, who hadn't been infected with the virus, become smart enough to follow Caeser? There were a few other things that I can't think of right off hand, but the reason I can't really remember them is because these things didn't bother me much at all. I think it's a pretty darn good movie in, if nothing else, concept. It was just an interesting story to me, and it was neat to see all the building blocks set into place in order for everything to unfold like it did. The character development left a bit to be desired on the humans' parts, but the story wasn't really about the humans. Of course, you need stable human characters in a movie like this, but the people did a decent job with what they were given, I think. I'm glad I own this, and it has got me interested in the rest of the franchise. I would recommend this to anybody who hasn't seen it yet. :)

Watched Transformers: The Movie. This film will never stop being fun. So very 80's and some pretty slick animation most of the time.
