If it's a good movie, one that feels like a whole story and not just a prelude to a series, then who cares if it bombs and doesn't produce sequels (besides the folks who's are due to loose money, of course)? This kind of thinking is the reason I'm totally disillusioned with the way Hollywood works. Everything is a gamble and they pay off or don't. I think if a movie is good it's a success. Many people may have ignored films like Hellboy I & II, Speed Racer, and Scott Pilgrim, but in my mind they're the most successful fantasy/sci-fi adventure films of the past decade.

If someone loves John Carter and the film bombs they'll still have that film - and a dozen books to read!
