Just watched Rise of the Planet of the Apes and it was surprisingly good. I liked that it was short; just the right runtime for the story it was telling and well-paced. Andy Serkis is as impressive as ever with his motion-captured performance and the CGI is some of the best in a movie to date.

THIRD ACT SPOILER:
I also liked how once all hell breaks loose with the apes, they don't just go around killing every person in sight. Caesar remains a sympathetic character because it's clear that he understands the senselessness of killing and his M.O. really is the liberation of his own kind. Too many action movies go overboard with having nameless extras bite it and it often dehumanizes the events on the screen. Casualties were kept to a minimum here, so when people do die it actually resonates with real impact. Smart move.

The only part of Captain America that I thought suffered from that cliche of extras dropping like flies was the raid on the last HYDRA stronghold in the Alps. Even for an obviously unrealistic comic book movie, it really puts a strain on the believability of the viewing experience to see so many of the charging good guys get vaporized one after another by a barrage of death ray blasts while all of the characters whose names we know just happen to avoid every single shot. I still thought the movie was great though. Just watched it again the other night with my dad (retired Air Force) and it actually maintained his attention from beginning to end, which is no small feat!

To me, the worst examples of the disconnecting death toll cliche have been the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

Finally watched Mission: Impossible III. It was MUCH better than the first two film, BUT my biggest gripe is that every one of these films just rehash the same plot. An IMF agent goes evil (Movie 1, 2, and 3), You think it's the boss, but it's actually the guy you trusted all along (Movie 1 and 3), Ethan is blamed/seen as a rogue agent (Movie 1 and 3). It just gets tiring. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is pretty great, though.

I watched Tucker and Dale vs. Evil on Netflix. Hilarious, clever, really well-thought-out. Definitely one of the best horror comedies I've seen.

Piranha (2003)

I loved this movie. So much gore and bikini, haha. :D

Boom

Now this is an Indian film [Bollywood]. However, its not your typical Bollywood film. It's actually an independant film, so not so sure if I should call it Bollywood or not. Yet, this film took on the "cult" style [i.e., Pulp Fiction] and I think it did a decent job. It's not by far the best, but certainly entertaining for me and worth a rewatch. I never seen an Indian film attempt this style so it was all brand new for me. The story itself needed a little work, but the photography was amazing, along with the acting. One of my favorite Indian actors, Amitabh Bachan starred in this film and he really surprised me in this one.

I can't remember much at the moment, but I give the film a B-.

Ra-One

Hmm....Bollywood's biggest budget film and I'm not too sure of what to think. The film was sort of what I expected from Bollywood. However, I can admit, as far as effects go, they are getting there. Yet, the film lacked in a lot of areas.

Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocal

Saw this today and I liked it. Tom Cruise wasn't annoying (though I haven't seen much of his stuff since Spielberg's WotW). Yet it was fun! The actng was decent, the score was more than thrilling. Plus I had no idea Anil Kapoor was in this film, so that was a pleasant surprise. My only criticism is how at times there were a few "cliche" scenes, but in a way that adds to the fun. If you love the series, watch it. If you haven't seen the past two, watch it! I recommend it to everyone.

My overall rating, B
