There are multiple pieces of art of that same design, you know.

Where is the assumption that Godzilla will undergo an "extreme redesign" coming from??

As far as I'm concerned, and at least to my knowledge, this is the only "official" concept art that Legendary has released to the public. They themselves have said this is how they depict and how they would want their Godzilla to be. I don't see an "extreme redesign" at all!!!!

Correction.............approach to the characters design is the beginning to a traditional approach IF IT is not comprimised. IF THE APPROACH IS COMPRIMISED, IT IS NOT TRADITIONAL.

More precisely, there are 20-21 official designs that were produced by Toho themselves over the course of the 28 official films. Which one is this unwavering "traditional design" that you guys keep on about? I mean, they all share the same basic traits but I think you'd be crazy to say the Godzillas from 54, 68, and 02 (for example) are some sort of gold standard for an unchanging design aesthetic.

The argument is a difference between who's willing to accept changes to a design that doesn't need any and those who aren't. There's a wide range of things that some think are cool and some that are totally grotesque. These artists who have the mentality that they're making Godzilla better or more interesting by adding spikes or feathers to the arms and legs is a bunch of hogwash. Art directors are the same way always trying to put their artistic mark on an existing property with mixed results. If Legendary Pictures stays within close range of the concept art already produced, everything will be fine. If, however, they start adding (or taking away) features that were there/not there before, it will suck. They promised us Godzilla and that's what we should get, not a revamped imitation.

When was the last time a Godzilla film featured the exact same design as the film before it?

1972. Godzilla vs. Gigan. That was the last time. Each and every film since then has tweaked and updated Godzilla's design in one or more ways. Why on Earth wouldn't the Legendary film maintain this tradition?

I agree with MFW, Ben, Kiryugoji, and king_ghidorah: I could care less if the design gets updated. So what if they want to go with something a bit more dinosaurian, if that ends up being the decision? If it still resembles Godzilla, sounds like Godzilla, and acts like Godzilla - it's GODZILLA! Besides that every REAL piece of concept art released or leaked has looked like some variation on the classic design, I really don't see where all this angst is coming from. Are you worried it's going to be a dramatic redesign like in 1998? Is that it? Are you still holding a grudge against a movie that came out thirteen years ago?

Stop worrying so much, people, and assuming the worst! It has to be bad for your health.

EDIT: Rereading what I wrote... I sound a bit like an ass. I apologize if anyone was offended. :(

Here is my take. The millenium Godzillas are a radical departure from the traditional Godzilla with the crystalline spikes, frog mouth, cobra neck and gasp they even made his fire fire colored!?!?!?! I accept that as a healthy update to the godzilla. What I do not accept is the GINO treatment where they changed absolutely everything. In my opinion there is a ratio of radical changes to classic features that must be maintained. If you want a more birdlike saurian godzilla then you have to keep the maple leaf dorsals, pock marked charcoal grey skin, and blue fire. If you want Godzilla to be spikey deformed mutant then you need to keep the stocky humanoid frame with 3 rows of spines etc. You can radically change some aspects as long as you maintain key features like they did with the millenium Godzillas and this did not bother me.

I can more or less dig that. I'm up for whatever changes they want to make (although I do prefer him to walk upright). I'd like them to keep the shape more or less the same size and I don't like the arm quills...but the rest of the design is pretty good...

I want something new that still reminds me of the old at times...if that makes sense.
