It's amazing that people defending this comic are harping on the kids/old woman scene with lengthy posts comparing it to other G films that may have had similar scenes....these scenes are the *least* of this first issue's problems, and are just taking attention away from the *Real* problems of issue #1, namely lack of plot, lazy story-telling, changing G's origin (this was the biggest flaw...takes away his mystique...with their *new* origin, how he is different from any of the other monsters who just show up at random?), the whole "Japan has nukes" angle, lack of any characters (it's pretty sad when Obama [:puke: ] is your most developed "character" in the story). These are the key areas that IDW needs to focus on improving, not the other scenes, which, while I didn't like, are miniscule compared to these other major problems.

And once again, the focus on defending/attacking the children/old lady scenes while ignoring other, much more important and significant problems/ flaws with this first issue continues....

The artwork is another problem with the comic. I'm going to briefly go through some of the issues with the art in issue #1.

- Rampant inconsistency. Godzilla and humans look different from page to page. It just looks sloppy. In the scene where the jets attack Godzilla, it looks like there's three different monsters. His face, tail, eyes, all change dramatically from one shot to the next.

As for humans, the worst example is when the woman is running away with her child, you first see her wearing a purple sweater, with the child wearing a green outfit. In the second panel they are now blue and red. And in the final panel with the close-up of their faces, the child now suddenly sports a cap on his head. Sloppy.

- Godzilla's first appearance is incredibly awkward. His bottom jaw appears to shoot out of the ground first somehow (despite the top jaw being clearly longer is other angles). Then suddenly a huge mound of sand forms in his mouth, where in the previous panel it looks like there's hardly a mouthful. As the father of the children looks at the island, there's a giant plume of smoke rising as if there was volcanic eruption of... sand?

- The Japanese on the signs are all written in gobbledygook nonsense. Phil Hester really couldn't be bothered to do a little research and actually put real Japanese on the signs? Lazy.

- After the nuke goes off in the ocean, Godzilla is suddenly standing amongst a pile of rocks. Surely it didn't vaporize the entire ocean.

Overall the art also suffers from lack of detail. This renders it unexciting, and underwhelming. I can't wait for Jeff Zornow to take over. His test pages, even
without any color are rather awesome:

^^^^

Wow, a post about an issue with this comic that doesn't have to do with the children/old lady scene....AMAZING!!!

And you're dead 100% right about the nonsensical Japanese....some may think this is nitpicking....I think it's just pointing out another reason why this first issue seemed so sloppy/uneven...

The next artist who is to work on Kingdom of Monsters - beginning with issue five - is . We don't know yet if Zornow is doing interiors.

For the record, I LIKE Hester's art but I can't really say any of the complaints (especially in reference to the Fakepanese) are totally off-target.

I still think this issue's overall quality really depends on the quality of the second and third issues. If their is a marked improvement, then perhaps this issue will look a lot better in hindsight but if they are just as unsatisfying, well, I probably won't defend it anymore the way I have been. Still, right now I still liked the first issue, even with its flaws.

Though - following up on a previous thread - I wound up giving in to nostalgia and picking up vols. 13 and 14 (issues 49-54) of the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comic and, yeah, the individual issues are the exact same length as Kingdom of Monsters (22-24 pages) but they are far more satisfying reads.
